What are some common challenges sales development representatives face when qualifying leads, and how can they overcome them?

Sales Development Representatives (SDRs) often encounter challenges such as reaching decision-makers, handling objections, and distinguishing qualified prospects from uninterested contacts. To overcome these hurdles, successful SDRs use targeted research to personalize outreach, employ effective questioning to identify pain points, and listen actively to address concerns. Regular collaboration with account executives and marketing teams also helps refine lead qualification criteria, ensuring SDRs focus their efforts on the most promising opportunities.

What does a sales development representative do?

Sales development representatives seek sales leads through marketing on social media, email, and phone calls. As a sales development representative, you determine if a sales lead has a good chance of purchasing the product or service you are marketing before sending that lead to a sales closer. This process allows salespeople to focus on closing the deal instead of prospecting. You speak with main buyers at companies or with prospective buyers who contact you after seeing your marketing materials, and you discuss their needs to see if your product is a good fit for their overall goals. Many sales development reps have a degree in business, marketing, or a related field. Others enter the role without formal education but with several years of experience in sales or marketing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a sales development representative, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Sales Development Representative, you need strong communication, prospecting, and lead qualification skills, typically supported by a bachelor's degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with CRM systems like Salesforce, email outreach tools, and sales enablement platforms is usually required. Persistence, active listening, and resilience are standout soft skills in this role. These abilities are essential for effectively identifying prospects, nurturing leads, and driving revenue growth in a competitive sales environment.

Is a sales development representative entry level?

A sales development representative (SDR) is often an entry-level role focused on prospecting and qualifying leads. It typically requires strong communication skills and may serve as a stepping stone to more advanced sales positions, with many companies offering on-the-job training. Prior experience is not always necessary, making it accessible for recent graduates or those new to sales.

Do sales development representatives make good money?

Sales development representatives (SDRs) typically earn a base salary plus commissions or bonuses based on sales performance. The total compensation can vary widely depending on the industry, location, and individual success, with many SDRs earning a competitive income that can increase with experience and skill development.

Job description

Launch your sales career with impact. Learn, grow, and help shape the future of our customer relationships. Fluidra is looking for a Sales Development Representative to join our team in Carlsbad, CA!

WHAT YOU WILL CONTRIBUTE
We’re looking for a proactive and ambitious Sales Development Representative (SDR) to join our growing sales team. In this role, you’ll focus on engaging B2B pool professionals through outbound prospecting and timely follow-up with inbound leads.

Your primary mission is to drive dealer sign-ups into our loyalty programs and ensure a seamless transition into onboarding—encouraging early and consistent purchases of Fluidra-branded products. You’ll help new accounts start strong by guiding them to explore and utilize key tools, digital resources, and exclusive product promotions through FluidraPro, laying the foundation for long-term value and growth.

As an SDR, you'll be the crucial first point of contact—warming up prospects, qualifying opportunities, and setting up our Account Growth Reps (AGRs) for success. If you're organized, curious, and eager to learn the craft of consultative selling, this is your launchpad. Additionally, you will:
  • Cold call and email B2B pool professionals to introduce loyalty programs and generate interest in our solutions.
  • Respond promptly to inbound marketing leads, guiding them through the signup process and toward activation.
  • Meet and exceed signup quotas, ensuring dealers not only enroll but also begin purchasing and leveraging FluidraPro tools and offers.
  • Qualify prospects through engaging conversations, surfacing business needs and potential fit.
  • Support onboarding for newly converted accounts, setting them up for purchasing success and digital adoption.
  • Keep CRM records accurate and up to date, documenting all prospect activities and lead progress.
  • Collaborate closely with Account Growth Representatives to prioritize accounts and coordinate outreach strategies.
  • Stay informed on products, programs, and promotions, so you can speak confidently and compellingly with prospective customers.
  • Monitor industry trends and share insights to help refine outreach and messaging.
WHAT WE SEEK

  • 2 + years experience in customer service, sales, retail, call centers, or prior internship experience required.
  • Clear and confident verbal and written communication skills - comfortable talking to new people over the phone and by email.
  • Ability to stay organized, take notes, and keep track of follow-ups.
  • Willingness to learn new tools, sales techniques, and CRM software - training will be provided.
  • Energetic, coachable, and motivated to grow your career in sales.
  • Enjoys working closely with others and supporting teammates to achieve shared goals.
  • Comfortable using email, spreadsheets, and web-based tools.
  • Can handle multiple tasks and manage your day to meet deadlines.
  • Friendly, reliable, and ready to represent the company well when speaking with prospects.
EDUCATION
High school diploma or equivalent required. Some college coursework or a degree in Business, Marketing, Communications, or a related field is a plus, but not required.

WHAT WE OFFER
An exciting opportunity to dive in and begin your career with a company that offers a competitive total rewards package that includes:
  • 2 weeks of paid vacation
  • Work from Home Fridays!
  • 11 paid Holidays
  • Full range of health benefits including medical, dental & vision, short & long-term disability
  • 401(K) matching (100% of first 3% contributed, 50% of the next 2%)
  • Health and wellness programs / gym reimbursement
  • Educational assistance up to $7,000 per year
  • On-site self-service café / free gourmet coffee stations
  • Company sponsored FUN events!
