What is a sales development representative?

Sales Development Representatives (SDRs) are professionals responsible for identifying and qualifying potential customers for a company’s products or services. They focus on outbound prospecting, engaging with leads through calls, emails, and social media, and setting up meetings or appointments for the sales team. SDRs play a crucial role in building the sales pipeline by generating and nurturing leads before passing them to account executives or senior sales staff. Their efforts help increase the efficiency and productivity of the overall sales process.

What does a sales development representative do?

Sales development representatives seek sales leads through marketing on social media, email, and phone calls. As a sales development representative, you determine if a sales lead has a good chance of purchasing the product or service you are marketing before sending that lead to a sales closer. This process allows salespeople to focus on closing the deal instead of prospecting. You speak with main buyers at companies or with prospective buyers who contact you after seeing your marketing materials, and you discuss their needs to see if your product is a good fit for their overall goals. Many sales development reps have a degree in business, marketing, or a related field. Others enter the role without formal education but with several years of experience in sales or marketing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a sales development representative, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Sales Development Representative, you need strong communication, prospecting, and lead qualification skills, typically supported by a bachelor's degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with CRM systems like Salesforce, email outreach tools, and sales enablement platforms is usually required. Persistence, active listening, and resilience are standout soft skills in this role. These abilities are essential for effectively identifying prospects, nurturing leads, and driving revenue growth in a competitive sales environment.

What are some common challenges sales development representatives face when qualifying leads, and how can they overcome them?

Sales Development Representatives (SDRs) often encounter challenges such as reaching decision-makers, handling objections, and distinguishing qualified prospects from uninterested contacts. To overcome these hurdles, successful SDRs use targeted research to personalize outreach, employ effective questioning to identify pain points, and listen actively to address concerns. Regular collaboration with account executives and marketing teams also helps refine lead qualification criteria, ensuring SDRs focus their efforts on the most promising opportunities.

Experienced SDRs or those working in high-demand industries can earn higher incomes, especially with strong sales skills and effective use of customer relationship management (CRM) tools.

We partner directly with leaders at these companies, fast-tracking exceptional candidates through the hiring process.
ABOUT THE ROLE
We are looking for an exceptional Sales Development Representative (SDR) to join a leading Utah-based HR company that makes it easier for small- and mid-sized businesses (SMBs) to employ people by streamlining payroll, employee benefits, HR, safety, and workers’ compensation services.

As a SDR, you will be on the front line of this HR company's growth. Your mission is to connect with CEOs, founders, and HR leaders at high-potential companies, educate them on the ROI of partnering with the company, and secure qualified discovery calls for their team. This is a high-energy, metrics-driven role: expect a target of 15+ sales-qualified meetings booked each month.

3 days in-person / hybrid at the Lindon, UT headquarters (395 W 600 N).

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Outbound Prospecting & Lead Generation

  • Conduct high-quality cold calling, social selling, and email sequencing to SMB decision-makers across Utah, Arizona, Wyoming, and other target markets.
  • Craft personalized messaging that highlights the company's ability to cut admin costs, improve benefits, and reduce risk for growing businesses.
  • Qualify prospects against their Ideal Client Profile (industry, headcount, multistate payroll needs, desire for bundled HR/benefits) and book meetings on AEs’ calendars.

CRM & Pipeline Management

  • Log all activities, dispositions, and notes in Outreach (or similar) in real time.
  • Maintain clean data hygiene and ensure a seamless hand-off to Account Executives.

Product & Market Expertise

  • Master the service stack—payroll, health & supplemental benefits, HR compliance, safety, workers’ compensation—and articulate the value in clear business terms.
  • Stay current on Professional Employer Organization (PEO) industry trends, competitor positioning, and regulatory changes impacting employers.

Continuous Improvement

  • Exceed weekly/monthly activity and meeting quotas; track personal KPIs.
  • Share call insights and objection trends with marketing to refine campaigns.
  • Participate in ongoing sales training and peer call-coaching sessions.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, or equivalent education
  • Preference for (but not required) candidates with 1+ year in a BDR/SDR or other high-volume outbound sales role (software, HR tech, PEO, or staffing preferred)
  • Comfortable making high-quality outbound calls per day and navigating gatekeepers
  • Excellent verbal, written, and digital communication skills; strong business acumen
  • Self-starter, resilient, and eager to learn in a fast-growing, team-oriented culture
  • Located in, or willing to travel occasionally to, Utah-front-range markets

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

  • Competitive salary ($55k base, $75k OTE)
  • The best benefits in Utah: employer-subsidized health plans and access to dental, vision, life & disability, 401(k), and more
  • Generous PTO, paid holidays, and hybrid flexibility
  • Ongoing professional development with sales experts
