What is a sales development representative?

Sales Development Representatives (SDRs) are professionals responsible for identifying and qualifying potential customers for a company’s products or services. They focus on outbound prospecting, engaging with leads through calls, emails, and social media, and setting up meetings or appointments for the sales team. SDRs play a crucial role in building the sales pipeline by generating and nurturing leads before passing them to account executives or senior sales staff. Their efforts help increase the efficiency and productivity of the overall sales process.

What does a sales development representative do?

Sales development representatives seek sales leads through marketing on social media, email, and phone calls. As a sales development representative, you determine if a sales lead has a good chance of purchasing the product or service you are marketing before sending that lead to a sales closer. This process allows salespeople to focus on closing the deal instead of prospecting. You speak with main buyers at companies or with prospective buyers who contact you after seeing your marketing materials, and you discuss their needs to see if your product is a good fit for their overall goals. Many sales development reps have a degree in business, marketing, or a related field. Others enter the role without formal education but with several years of experience in sales or marketing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a sales development representative, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Sales Development Representative, you need strong communication, prospecting, and lead qualification skills, typically supported by a bachelor's degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with CRM systems like Salesforce, email outreach tools, and sales enablement platforms is usually required. Persistence, active listening, and resilience are standout soft skills in this role. These abilities are essential for effectively identifying prospects, nurturing leads, and driving revenue growth in a competitive sales environment.

What are some common challenges sales development representatives face when qualifying leads, and how can they overcome them?

Sales Development Representatives (SDRs) often encounter challenges such as reaching decision-makers, handling objections, and distinguishing qualified prospects from uninterested contacts. To overcome these hurdles, successful SDRs use targeted research to personalize outreach, employ effective questioning to identify pain points, and listen actively to address concerns. Regular collaboration with account executives and marketing teams also helps refine lead qualification criteria, ensuring SDRs focus their efforts on the most promising opportunities.

What is the difference between Sales Development Representative vs Business Development Representative?

Do sales development representatives make good money?

Sales development representatives (SDRs) typically earn a base salary plus commissions or bonuses based on their performance, with total compensation often ranging from $40,000 to $70,000 annually. Experienced SDRs or those working in high-demand industries can earn higher incomes, especially with strong sales skills and effective use of customer relationship management (CRM) tools.

Is a sales development representative an entry level role?

Yes, a sales development representative (SDR) is typically an entry-level position in sales. It often requires strong communication skills, basic knowledge of sales tools like CRM software, and is a common starting point for careers in sales or business development.

Job description

Full-time Sales Development Representative (SDR) | Pronto

In-Person, Lehi Utah

About Pronto

Pronto is a multi-industry communication platform built for deskless workers, trusted by over 5 million users and hundreds of organizations across restaurants & hospitality, home services, education, and direct-to-home sales.

While tools like Slack and MS Teams work well for office workers, the armies of hourly employees worldwide remain underserved, reverting to consumer apps like WhatsApp, GroupMe, or simple text threads (SMS, iMessage). These apps are detrimental to businesses, pose legal risks, and are ultimately frustrating to manage, blurring the line between work and personal life. Pronto solves that.

The Opportunity

Our sales team has driven exciting growth over the last three years, and we're ready to add our next great hire. This is a high-energy, 100% in-person SDR role based at our Lehi, Utah office, built for someone who loves the hunt, thrives on competition, and isn't afraid of the grind that comes before the win. You'll join a small, tight-knit team with a culture built on outbound hustle, hitting targets, and still balancing work/personal life.

Creativity is central to how we operate. We need someone willing to think outside the box and get creative for each prospect. New ideas are welcome, encouraged, and celebrated. That being said, we have developed the proper formula to plug you right into our systems and begin winning immediately.

You'll work alongside our SDR Manager, who will be an ever-available resource as you ramp. He's amazing at what he does - a true sales hunter.

You'll own top-of-funnel pipeline by sourcing 15+ qualified demo meetings per month.

What You'll Be Selling

Our hottest growth vertical right now is restaurants and hospitality. We specialize in selling to multi-unit restaurant groups (20 to 500 locations), helping them replace fragmented, consumer-grade messaging apps with a structured, secure communication platform built for hourly workforces. It's a compelling, tangible product with clear ROI, and we'll fully train you on the industry.

How You'll Prospect

  • Cold calling
  • LinkedIn outreach (connection campaigns + personalized video)
  • Personalized and sequenced email campaigns
  • In-person visits
  • Trade shows

What We're Looking For

  • High energy and a genuine drive to compete and win
  • Resilience for the repetitive, unglamorous side of outbound (cold calls, follow-ups, rejections)
  • Excitement for new revenue and the rewards that come with it
  • Experience in outreach or sales to hospitality is a plus, but not required
  • Proficiency with: HubSpot, LinkedIn Sales Navigator, Apollo, a dialer, and Google Workspace

Compensation

  • Base salary: $40,000 to $50,000. If you are an experienced rep with a proven track record of exceeding quota, let's talk. We are willing to match or exceed your current base comp.
  • Commission on demo meetings held and closed-won deals
  • OTE: We offer a ramping bonus model on SDR-sourced meetings held. With each demo you hold in a given month, your bonus increases, starting at $50 and growing to well past $200 per hold. We've had SDRs make $5,000+/month in bonuses and commissions (*not including base comp*).
  • Benefits: Medical and dental

To Apply

Whether you're a current sales professional ready to make a change in your career and jump into SMB SaaS sales, already have industry experience, or are brand new/out-of-college, we want to hear from you. All that matters is your desire to put in the reps and grow your sales career at a fast-growing SaaS company.
