Job Description

We are seeking an Occupational Health & Safety Consultant / Manager to support clients across North America and collaborate with our internal Health and Safety team. This role focuses on ensuring regulatory compliance, reducing risk, and designing and implementing effective safety programs for both client and internal operations.

This position combines clientfacing consulting with internal program support. You will work directly with clients to conduct risk assessments, provide practical recommendations, develop tailored safety programs, and guide implementation efforts, while also contributing to the ongoing development and execution of J.S. Held's internal health and safety initiatives.

This is an ideal opportunity for a professional who enjoys solving complex client challenges, performing fieldbased assessments, and delivering expert advisory services in occupational health and safety (H&S).

Job Responsibilities

Client Consulting & Advisory Work

  • Serve as a trusted advisor to clients, providing expert guidance on OSHA / NFPA / ANSI compliance, risk mitigation, and best practices in workplace safety.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to organizations and safety committees, coach frontline supervision on occupational safety risks and safety culture.
  • Perform task-based Job Hazard Analysis (JHA), Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) hazard assessments, and exposure assessments (noise, silica, welding fumes, solvents).
  • Recommend feasible engineering controls, administrative controls, and PPE; validate effectiveness.
  • Draft or update site-specific safety programs (e.g., Fall Protection Program, Electrical Safety Program, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) Program, Hazard Communication, Emergency Action Plan, Hot Work).
  • Conduct gap assessments or compliance audits against regulatory standards or client requirements.
  • Develop written reports, recommendations, and corrective action plans tailored to client needs.

Project Delivery

  • Support small to large-sized consulting projects independently; assist senior consultants on larger engagements.
  • Prepare and present findings to client leadership teams, including technical summaries and actionable recommendations.
  • Provide ongoing support to clients implementing safety programs, training, or operational improvements.

Training & Program Development

  • Create and deliver instructor-led training (ILT) and toolbox talks on OSHA-required topics (e.g., Fall Protection, Electrical Safety, Hazard Communication, Respiratory Protection, LOTO, Electrical Safety, Powered Industrial Trucks).
  • Assist clients with the creation or improvement of H&S programs, policies, procedures, and safety management systems (SMS).

Internal Health and Safety Program Support

  • Develop and deliver engaging internal training programs aligned with J.S. Held's diverse service offerings.
  • Maintain compliance with OSHA recordkeeping requirements, including accurate management of OSHA logs.
  • Partner with Project Managers and project teams to provide guidance on health and safety practices, personal protective equipment (PPE), and risk management requirements, ensuring employee protection from anticipated occupational hazards.
  • Create and distribute safety alerts to proactively address emerging risks and reinforce safe work practices.
  • Manage the incident reporting and management system, serving as the primary point of contact for all reported safety incidents across J.S. Held.
  • Review and evaluate risk assessments and projectspecific health and safety plans for completeness and effectiveness.
  • Conduct periodic reviews and updates of written safety policies, procedures, and management systems to ensure ongoing compliance and continuous improvement.
  • Maintain and update J.S. Held's corporate profiles within contractor management platforms, including Avetta and ISNet.
  • Perform internal audits to assess the implementation and effectiveness of J.S. Held's Safety Management System.

Regulatory Expertise

  • Interpret and apply Federal, State, and local regulations (OSHA, NFPA, ANSI, State OSH programs).
  • Assist clients with compliance obligations, corrective actions, and preparation for regulatory inspections.

Internal Collaboration

  • Work closely with multidisciplinary teams across EHS, environmental, industrial hygiene, and engineering practice areas.
  • Support proposal development, scope definition, and client relationship growth.
Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Health, Industrial Hygiene, or related field.
  • 3-5 years of experience in occupational safety and health.
  • Ability to independently manage multiple client projects simultaneously.
  • Strong understanding of OSHA regulations and safety management principles.
  • Excellent communication skills, especially in delivering findings and recommendations to clients.
  • Strong writing skills in writing safety findings and safety policies / procedures.
  • Willingness to travel to client sites (up to 50-70%). This includes air travel and hotel stays.

Preferred

  • Prior experience with industries such as industrial manufacturing, chemical, pharmaceuticals, or oil & gas.
  • Experience in a consulting or client facing role.
  • Professional certifications such as ASP, CSP, OHST, CHST, or equivalent.
  • Experience generating proposals, scopes of work, or client presentations.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work in a variety of field environments, including industrial sites, construction areas, or industrial manufacturing settings.
  • Ability to walk uneven terrain, climb ladders, and lift up to 50 lbs as required for site inspections.
  • Ability to move safety equipment such as tripods, gas monitors, air sampling pumps, or training materials.
  • Ability to walk, stand, climb, and move throughout construction and industrial environments for extended periods (up to 6+ hours per day)
  • Ability to work in industrial environments, which may include, work indoors and outdoors in varying weather and environmental conditions, including noise, dust, and active construction.
  • Must be able to wear PPE including hard hats, safety glasses, steeltoe footwear, highvisibility garments, respirators, and fall protection.

A reasonable estimate of the salary range for this role is $85,000.00 - $105,000,00.ย Any offered salary range is based on a wide array of factors including but not limitedย to skillset,ย experience, training, location, scope of role, management responsibility, etc.
