How much do safety flagger jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 1, 2026, the average hourly pay for safety flagger in the United States is $17.29, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $14.42 and $19.23 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Safety Flagger, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Safety Flagger, you need a solid understanding of traffic control procedures, situational awareness, and typically a flagger certification. Familiarity with two-way radios, traffic cones, and standard safety equipment is essential. Attention to detail, strong communication, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are important soft skills for this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring the safety of workers, motorists, and pedestrians in potentially hazardous environments.

What are some common challenges Safety Flaggers face on the job, and how can they be managed?

Safety Flaggers often work outdoors in varying weather conditions and must remain alert for long periods to ensure the safety of both workers and the public. Managing communication with drivers and construction crews can be challenging, especially in high-traffic or noisy environments. Staying vigilant, using clear hand signals, and following established safety protocols can help flaggers effectively manage these challenges and minimize risk. Regular breaks and open communication with the team also contribute to a safer, more manageable workday.

What are safety flaggers?

Safety flaggers are trained personnel responsible for directing traffic around construction sites, roadwork, or accident scenes to ensure the safety of workers, drivers, and pedestrians. They use signs, hand signals, and sometimes communication devices to control the flow of vehicles and prevent accidents in hazardous areas. Safety flaggers must be alert, follow strict safety protocols, and often undergo specific training and certification to perform their duties effectively.

What is the difference between Safety Flagger vs Traffic Control Technician?

Safety Flagger and Traffic Control Technician roles often overlap, especially in outdoor construction zones. While both require similar certifications and work environments, Traffic Control Technicians typically handle broader tasks like installing signs and barriers, whereas Safety Flagger focuses primarily on directing traffic and ensuring safety at specific points. Understanding these differences helps employers and workers clarify job expectations and certifications needed.
