What is a Rust software developer?

A Rust Software Developer is a programmer who specializes in using the Rust programming language to build software applications. Rust is known for its focus on safety, speed, and concurrency, making it popular for systems programming, web services, and performance-critical tasks. Rust Software Developers may work on a variety of projects, from operating systems and embedded devices to backend web servers and command-line tools. Their responsibilities include writing, testing, and maintaining code, as well as collaborating with other developers to design robust and efficient systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Rust software developer?

To thrive as a Rust Software Developer, you need a solid background in systems programming, memory management, and proficiency in Rust, often supported by a degree in computer science or related experience. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, build tools such as Cargo, and experience with cross-platform development are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set outstanding candidates apart. These abilities are essential for building safe, efficient, and reliable software in demanding technical environments.

What are some common challenges faced by Rust software developers when working on large-scale projects?

Rust Software Developers often encounter challenges related to managing complex codebases, especially as projects scale. The language's strict ownership and borrowing rules, while beneficial for safety and concurrency, can make refactoring and integrating with legacy systems more time-consuming. Additionally, since Rust is still a relatively new language, developers may face limited library support or community resources for certain specialized tasks. Collaborating closely with teammates and leveraging thorough documentation helps to streamline workflows and overcome these hurdles.

What is the difference between Rust Software vs C++ Developer?

Search & Comparison IntentUnderstanding Rust's role vs C++ in development

Rust Software developers focus on safe, concurrent programming using Rust, often in modern systems and web assembly projects. C++ Developers work primarily with performance-critical applications across various industries. While both roles require programming expertise, Rust emphasizes safety and modern syntax, whereas C++ is known for its performance and legacy codebases.

Job description

Who We Are
Delta, founded in 1971, is a global provider of power and thermal management solutions. Its mission statement, "To provide innovative, clean and energy-efficient solutions for a better tomorrow," focuses on addressing key environmental issues such as global climate change. As an energy-saving solutions provider with core competencies in power electronics and automation, Delta's business categories include Power Electronics, Mobility, Automation, and Infrastructure.
At Delta, we're leading the energy transition with innovative solutions in solar inverters, energy storage systems, and EV charging infrastructure. Our technologies are helping utilities, businesses, and communities decarbonize and build resilient, intelligent energy ecosystems. Join us in creating a cleaner, smarter energy future.
Role Summary
Build and maintain the embedded software stack for the Delta Unit Controller, the skid-level brain that coordinates PCS, BMS, and HVAC and exposes a clean interface to the upstream RT and SCADA. You will lead the platform of the developed code base onto Delta US hardware, set up modern CI/CD on Azure DevOps, and deliver IEEE 1547-2018 / UL 1741-SB compliant firmware.
Key Responsibilities
• Develop firmware/middleware for the Unit Controller in C/C++ (and Rust where appropriate) on Linux / RTOS targets (Yocto, FreeRTOS, Zephyr)
• Receive and re-platform the existing Taiwan Unit Controller code base; refactor for US PCS/BESS vendors and US standards
• Implement Modbus TCP/RTU, IEC 61850 (client), CAN, and OPC UA stacks; integrate with PCS, BMS, HVAC, and meters
• Stand up CI/CD pipelines on Azure DevOps with self-hosted build agents, automated unit tests, static analysis (MISRA, Coverity), and HIL-in-the-loop gates
• Implement secure boot, signed OTA updates, role-based access, audit logging - aligned to IEC 62443-4-1/-4-2 and NERC CIP where applicable
Minimum Qualifications
• BS/MS in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Science; 5+ years in embedded software for industrial / energy system
• Expert in C/C++ on Linux and/or RTOS; strong with multithreading, real-time scheduling, IPC, and deterministic networking
• Industrial protocol experience: Modbus TCP, IEC 61850 (MMS/GOOSE client), DNP3, OPC UA, CA
• Modern DevOps: Git, Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions, Docker, Yocto build systems, hardware-in the-loop test rig
