What is a Rust software developer?

A Rust Software Developer is a programmer who specializes in using the Rust programming language to build software applications. Rust is known for its focus on safety, speed, and concurrency, making it popular for systems programming, web services, and performance-critical tasks. Rust Software Developers may work on a variety of projects, from operating systems and embedded devices to backend web servers and command-line tools. Their responsibilities include writing, testing, and maintaining code, as well as collaborating with other developers to design robust and efficient systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Rust software developer?

To thrive as a Rust Software Developer, you need a solid background in systems programming, memory management, and proficiency in Rust, often supported by a degree in computer science or related experience. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, build tools such as Cargo, and experience with cross-platform development are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set outstanding candidates apart. These abilities are essential for building safe, efficient, and reliable software in demanding technical environments.

What are some common challenges faced by Rust software developers when working on large-scale projects?

Rust Software Developers often encounter challenges related to managing complex codebases, especially as projects scale. The language's strict ownership and borrowing rules, while beneficial for safety and concurrency, can make refactoring and integrating with legacy systems more time-consuming. Additionally, since Rust is still a relatively new language, developers may face limited library support or community resources for certain specialized tasks. Collaborating closely with teammates and leveraging thorough documentation helps to streamline workflows and overcome these hurdles.

What is the difference between Rust Software vs C++ Developer?

AspectRust SoftwareC++ Developer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Computer Science, Rust certifications (optional)Bachelor's in Computer Science, C++ certifications (optional)
Work EnvironmentTech companies, startups, embedded systemsSoftware firms, game development, embedded systems
Industry UsageEmerging in systems programming, web assembly, safety-critical appsWidely used in software, gaming, systems, and embedded development
Search & Comparison IntentUnderstanding Rust's role vs C++ in development

Rust Software developers focus on safe, concurrent programming using Rust, often in modern systems and web assembly projects. C++ Developers work primarily with performance-critical applications across various industries. While both roles require programming expertise, Rust emphasizes safety and modern syntax, whereas C++ is known for its performance and legacy codebases.

Job description

About Atonom

At Atonom.ai, we are defining the Autonomous Era by building the world's first true "Cloud Employees", intelligent AI agents capable of executing complex work across Sales, Marketing, Support, and HR. We believe that growth should be limited only by ambition, not headcount. By moving beyond simple automation to genuine autonomy, we empower businesses to scale their workforce instantly and efficiently. Join us as we build the infrastructure for the next generation of work, where human creativity pairs with limitless machine execution to achieve the impossible.

On-site only: This position is not remote. You must be able to work from our Provo, Utah office during normal business hours (Monday-Friday). Occasional evenings or weekends may be needed for critical launches and go-lives.

What you'll do

  • Design, build, and scale production systems across the stack (frontend and backend) in order to power our AI conversation and workflow platform.
  • Lead architecture for microservices and event-driven systems while setting patterns for reliability, performance, and observability.
  • Ship high-quality, secure features from spec to production including API design, data modeling, code reviews, CI/CD, and instrumentation.
  • Collaborate with AI and Product teams to turn business problems into robust software that integrates prompts, automations, and guardrails.
  • Improve developer experience through testing strategies, build pipelines, documentation, and operational runbooks.
  • Mentor early and mid-career engineers while raising the bar on code quality and engineering excellence.
  • Partner with Customer Success during go-lives to ensure smooth deployments and capture learnings.

Who you are

  • 12+ years of professional software engineering experience building and shipping production systems at scale.
  • Strong proficiency in JavaScript/TypeScript and a modern frontend framework (React, Vue, or similar) plus HTML/CSS and responsive design.
  • Backend expertise in Go, Rust, or Python (Go preferred) with a strong understanding of API design, concurrency, and performance tuning.
  • Deep experience with PostgreSQL including indexing, query optimization, and migrations with a pragmatic approach to data modeling.
  • Solid background in RESTful services, microservices architecture, and distributed systems.
  • Hands-on experience with Docker and containerized deployments; familiarity with Kubernetes is a plus.
  • Strong communicator who can explain tradeoffs to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and motivated to deliver outcomes in a startup environment.

Why join

  • Real ownership of systems with direct customer impact.
  • A tight-knit team where your ideas can ship quickly.
  • Hands-on AI product work that delivers measurable outcomes.
  • Mentorship, career growth, and a clear path toward Staff or Principal roles.

Benefits
