Rust Embedded information

Is Rust good for embedded programming?

Rust is increasingly used for embedded programming due to its focus on safety, performance, and low-level control. It offers features like ownership and zero-cost abstractions, making it suitable for resource-constrained environments and real-time systems. Many embedded developers adopt Rust alongside C and C++ to improve reliability and security in their projects.

Is embedded systems still worth it in 2026?

Embedded systems roles, including those for Rust Embedded developers, remain valuable in 2026 due to ongoing demand for low-level programming in IoT, automotive, and industrial applications. Skills in real-time operating systems, hardware interfaces, and safety standards continue to be essential in this field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Rust Embedded position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Rust Embedded professional, you need strong proficiency in the Rust programming language, embedded systems design, and low-level hardware interaction, often supported by a degree in computer engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field. Experience with microcontroller platforms (such as ARM Cortex-M), version control systems like Git, and tools such as embedded debuggers or simulators is commonly required; certifications in embedded development or safety standards (e.g. ISO 26262) can be advantageous. Effective problem-solving, attention to detail, and strong collaboration skills are essential for successful project delivery. These skills ensure reliability, efficiency, and safety in developing robust embedded software for critical hardware applications.

What engineer makes $500,000 a year?

Highly experienced engineers in specialized fields such as senior embedded systems engineers working with Rust in high-demand industries can earn salaries approaching or exceeding $500,000 annually, especially with extensive expertise, certifications, and leadership roles. Such compensation often includes bonuses, stock options, or other incentives in addition to base salary.

What are some typical day-to-day tasks for a Rust Embedded engineer?

As a Rust Embedded engineer, your daily tasks often include designing, coding, and debugging firmware or low-level drivers in Rust, conducting hardware-software integration tests, and working closely with cross-functional teams such as hardware engineers and QA specialists. You may also participate in code reviews, optimize system performance, and document technical specifications to support maintainable development. Troubleshooting and resolving issues that arise during real-world device deployment is also a common responsibility. This role involves a mix of independent problem-solving and collaborative teamwork to ensure reliable, high-performance embedded solutions.

What is a Rust Embedded job?

A Rust Embedded job involves developing software for embedded systems using the Rust programming language. These systems include microcontrollers, IoT devices, and real-time applications where performance, safety, and reliability are critical. Rust's memory safety features and concurrency support make it well-suited for embedded development, reducing common issues like buffer overflows and data races. Developers in this field work with low-level hardware interactions, device drivers, and firmware while optimizing for constraints like power consumption and processing speed.

How much do Rust programmers make?

Rust programmers typically earn between $80,000 and $130,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. Skilled developers with expertise in embedded systems, low-level programming, and tools like Cargo and Rustup tend to command higher salaries.

Job description

Umbra is an American space technology company delivering advanced systems, from sensors to spacecraft, that empower customers worldwide with unmatched access to critical information from space. Our mission is simple and ambitious: redefine spaceโ€”for people, systems, and missions in every domain. Umbraโ€™s ecosystem operates through three business units: Remote Sensing (the data), Space Systems (the components), and Mission Solutions (the platforms).Together, our teams develop capabilities that deliver persistent access, resilient performance, and mission-ready solutions, advancing U.S. space leadership while keeping the world safe and informed.

About the Team

Space Systems โ€“ The Components

Space Systems is where Umbra turns hardware and software designs into on-orbit realities; developing, implementing and iterating mission-ready core technology, while simultaneously advancing the next generation of our own satellite constellation. Space Systems is vertically integrated across the satellite architecture, thus the team designs, builds, and tests an array of critical components and subsystems, including power systems, communications, control systems, deployment hardware, avionics, and payloads, as well as the flight software, firmware and digital design solutions to support the entire hardware stack. Our focus is on first principles engineering, and our mandate is simple: it has to work when it counts. Every bolt, board, and binary is proven on our own SAR constellation, ensuring flight-proven reliability where failure is not an option.

If you want to work on cutting edge space technology while maintaining the highest standard for innovation and mission ready performance, you belong here at Umbra.

About the Job

Umbra is seeking an Embedded Systems Engineer with a strong firmware background to support development of mission-critical satellite systems. This role focuses on bare-metal embedded development, system integration, and hardware bring-up, with opportunities to contribute across the full lifecycleโ€”from prototype to flight-ready systems.

You will work closely with electrical, software, and systems engineers to build and validate embedded solutions on real hardware. This role is ideal for someone who can take well-defined problems, execute quickly, and contribute to improving firmware infrastructure, tooling, and system reliability.

This position is based on-site in our Santa Barbara/Goleta, CA office.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and debug low-level drivers (SPI, UART/RS-485, GPIO, timers, interrupts).
  • Participate in code reviews and MR support, ensuring code quality and maintainability.
