What is the difference between Rust Crypto vs Blockchain Developer?

AspectRust CryptoBlockchain Developer
Required CredentialsProgramming skills in Rust, cryptography knowledgeProgramming skills, blockchain protocols, smart contract experience
Work EnvironmentCrypto projects, security-focused teams, software developmentBlockchain platforms, decentralized applications, fintech companies
Industry UsageCryptography, security, blockchain infrastructureBlockchain platforms, decentralized apps, cryptocurrency projects

Rust Crypto specialists focus on cryptographic security and developing secure software using Rust, often within blockchain or security projects. Blockchain Developers build and maintain blockchain applications, smart contracts, and decentralized systems. While both roles work within the blockchain industry, Rust Crypto emphasizes cryptography and security, whereas Blockchain Developers focus on application development and protocol implementation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Rust Crypto Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Rust Crypto Engineer, you need strong proficiency in Rust programming, a solid foundation in cryptography concepts, and experience with secure software development. Familiarity with cryptographic libraries (like RustCrypto), version control systems (such as Git), and relevant certifications such as Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) are often valuable. Meticulous attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective collaboration skills help ensure robust, secure code and successful teamwork. These skills are critical for developing reliable cryptographic solutions that protect sensitive data and maintain system integrity.

How does a Rust Crypto developer typically collaborate with security and blockchain teams in a project?

As a Rust Crypto developer, you’ll often work closely with both security experts and blockchain engineers to ensure cryptographic protocols are implemented securely and efficiently. Collaboration usually involves regular code reviews, joint threat modeling sessions, and sharing updates on algorithm changes or vulnerabilities. Effective communication is key, as your work directly impacts the safety and reliability of blockchain-based applications. Expect to participate in cross-functional meetings to align on best practices, design decisions, and integration efforts.

What is a Rust Crypto developer?

A Rust Crypto developer is a software engineer who specializes in building cryptographic software using the Rust programming language. They focus on developing secure, efficient, and reliable cryptographic libraries, tools, or protocols. Rust's strong memory safety guarantees and performance make it a popular choice for cryptography, and developers working in this field must have a strong understanding of both cryptographic principles and the unique features of Rust. Their work is critical in ensuring data security for a variety of applications, from blockchain to secure communications.

Job description

Architect Crypto Digital Asset Custody & Blockchain Platforms

Location: Onshore Austin / Dallas

Salary: $120000 - $170000/Annum

Job Summary

Experience: 12+ years preferred

We are hiring an Architect Digital Asset Custody & Blockchain Platforms to define and lead the technical architecture for digital asset custody, tokenization, blockchain infrastructure, wallet services, cryptographic key management, and resilient custody workflows. This is a senior hands-on architecture role operating across blockchain platforms, secure distributed systems, HSM/MPC-based key management, custody policy controls, and production-grade operational resilience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Define end-to-end architecture for digital asset custody platforms across wallets, blockchains, environments, policy systems, and operational workflows.
  • Lead architecture for Layer 1 blockchain integrations, transaction lifecycle handling, finality, forks, reorgs, event propagation, and chain-specific recovery patterns.
  • Architect blockchain infrastructure services including indexers, event processors, chain data APIs, observability tooling, and interoperability components.
  • Design institutional-grade key management solutions using HSMs, MPC, secure key generation, storage, rotation, signing, recovery, and backup patterns.
  • Define wallet architecture for transaction creation, signing workflows, submission pipelines, smart contract interaction, and token standard support.
  • Lead architecture for a custody policy engine covering authorization, approvals, limits, segregation of duties, exception handling, auditability, and enforceability.
  • Establish disaster recovery and incident response architecture for key recovery, quorum loss, chain events, custody failures, and operational recovery.
  • Provide technical leadership across engineering, security, risk, operations, SRE, architecture, and leadership stakeholders.
  • Use GenAI and agentic AI tools to accelerate architecture design, threat modeling, protocol analysis, testing, documentation, and reviews while maintaining engineering rigor.

Required Qualifications

  • 12+ years of experience in software engineering, platform engineering, secure systems engineering, or architecture.
  • Strong experience designing secure, scalable, observable, and fault-tolerant distributed systems.
  • Hands-on experience with blockchain or distributed ledger platforms, especially Layer 1 protocols and transaction lifecycles.
  • Experience architecting backend services, APIs, data pipelines, blockchain infrastructure, and observability components.
  • Deep understanding of cryptographic systems, secure key management, HSMs, MPC, signing workflows, and custody-grade controls.
  • Experience with wallet architecture, custody workflows, transaction controls, and secure blockchain transaction processing.
  • Strong understanding of resilience, disaster recovery, incident response, operational risk, and audit-ready system design.
  • Programming experience in one or more languages such as Go, Java, Rust, Python, C, or C++.
  • Ability to influence technical direction and communicate risk-based architecture trade-offs to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with crypto custody platforms, digital asset platforms, tokenization platforms, or blockchain infrastructure.
  • Experience with blockchain indexers, explorers, chain analytics, event processing, and reconciliation systems.
  • Familiarity with Web3 security tooling such as Slither, Mythril, and Foundry Fuzzing.
  • Experience collaborating with security auditors such as Trail of Bits, Halborn, or similar firms.
  • Prior ownership of disaster recovery design, security runbooks, incident response processes, or post-incident remediation.
  • Experience applying AI tools to architecture, engineering, documentation, testing, and review workflows.
