How much do rural nursing jobs pay per year?
What is rural nursing?
What unique challenges do rural nurses face compared to those in urban healthcare settings?
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a rural nurse, and why are they important?
What is the difference between Rural Nursing vs Community Health Nursing?
| Aspect | Rural Nursing | Community Health Nursing |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | RN license, possibly additional certifications in rural health | RN license, public health or community health certifications |
| Work Environment | Rural clinics, small hospitals, remote areas | Public health agencies, community clinics, outreach programs |
| Employer & Industry | Rural healthcare facilities, clinics | Public health departments, non-profits |
Both roles involve patient care and health promotion, but Rural Nursing focuses on providing healthcare in remote, rural settings, often requiring adaptability to limited resources. Community Health Nursing emphasizes population health, prevention, and education within communities, often working in urban or suburban areas. While they share similar credentials, their work environments and primary goals differ significantly.

Alaska Rural Healthcare Nursing Leadership Opportunities

Job description
Rural Staffing Services partners with rural hospitals, clinics, Tribal health organizations, regional health systems, community health centers, long-term care providers, and community healthcare organizations throughout Alaska to identify experienced nursing leaders who understand the unique needs of rural, remote, and frontier care.
We are currently connecting with professionals who may be interested in active and upcoming nurse manager, nursing supervisor, house supervisor, director of nursing, nursing education, and related nursing leadership opportunities across Alaska.
These opportunities may be available within:
- Critical Access Hospitals
- Rural and community hospitals
- Rural Health Clinics
- Federally Qualified Health Centers
- Tribal health organizations
- Regional health corporations
- Village-based healthcare programs
- Skilled nursing facilities
- Long-term care and senior care organizations
- Integrated rural healthcare systems
- Multi-site and regional healthcare networks
In rural Alaska, nursing leaders are often among the most visible and trusted people in the organization.
They support frontline employees, help maintain safe staffing, strengthen communication, solve problems in real time, and ensure patients receive dependable care regardless of the hour, location, weather, or circumstance.
In some organizations, nursing leaders may support teams across multiple departments, clinics, facilities, or communities separated by significant distances.
They may help coordinate care between village clinics and regional hospitals, support medical transport, respond to staffing shortages, and help teams work safely when immediate specialty resources are limited.
Rural nursing leadership requires flexibility, sound judgment, compassion, cultural humility, and the ability to build trust across departments and communities.
The strongest leaders are approachable, steady under pressure, and willing to work alongside their teams while maintaining clear expectations and accountability.
They understand that supporting nurses is directly connected to protecting patient access and keeping essential services available close to home.
Responsibilities will vary by organization, community, and position and may include:
- Providing daily leadership, guidance, and support to nursing teams
- Overseeing staffing, scheduling, patient flow, call coverage, and nursing operations
- Supporting safe, high-quality, patient-centered, and culturally respectful care
- Mentoring, coaching, and developing nurses, charge nurses, supervisors, and emerging leaders
- Strengthening employee engagement, retention, accountability, and workplace culture
- Responding to staffing concerns, clinical issues, emergencies, and operational challenges
- Supporting orientation, education, competency, and professional development
- Collaborating with physicians, advanced practice providers, executives, department leaders, community health aides, and support services
- Monitoring quality, safety, documentation, infection prevention, and patient-care standards
- Developing and maintaining nursing policies, procedures, protocols, and workflows
- Supporting regulatory readiness, accreditation, surveys, audits, and corrective action plans
- Participating in recruitment, interviewing, onboarding, workforce planning, and succession planning
- Helping improve communication between shifts, departments, facilities, communities, and leadership
- Supporting nurses working across emergency, inpatient, outpatient, clinic, long-term care, maternal health, surgical, or community-based services
- Helping maintain coverage during vacancies, weather disruptions, transportation delays, or increased patient demand
- Supporting telehealth, regional consultation, and coordination between village-based care and regional hospitals
- Supporting patients, families, employees, and communities during difficult or unexpected situations
- Helping ensure nursing services remain stable, dependable, and available to the communities being served
Qualifications will vary by opportunity, but organizations may seek:
- Current Registered Nurse licensure or eligibility for Alaska licensure
- Progressive nursing experience
- Previous leadership experience as a nurse manager, supervisor, house supervisor, director, or comparable nursing leader
- Strong clinical judgment, communication, organization, and problem-solving skills
- Experience supporting staffing, scheduling, employee development, or nursing operations
- Knowledge of quality, patient safety, regulatory requirements, infection prevention, and nursing standards
- The ability to remain calm, visible, practical, and supportive during challenging situations
- Experience leading through workforce shortages, organizational change, or operational instability
- Experience supporting nurses across multiple departments, facilities, or communities may be valuable
- Experience with rural hospitals, Critical Access Hospitals, FQHCs, Tribal health organizations, regional health corporations, clinics, long-term care providers, or community healthcare organizations
- Experience working with Alaska Native communities, Tribal health organizations, Indian Health Service programs, or tribally operated systems may be highly valued for some opportunities
- Relevant education and certification based on the specific position
- A collaborative, dependable, culturally respectful, and relationship-focused leadership style
- Some opportunities may require or prefer a bachelor's degree in nursing, a master's degree, specialty certification, or previous experience within a particular clinical department.
- Specific education, licensure, certification, travel, call, and experience requirements will depend on the organization and position.
Opportunities may include:
- Permanent nursing leadership positions
- Interim nursing leadership assignments
- Regional or multi-site nursing leadership
- Hospital or clinic-based positions
- Tribal health nursing leadership
- Long-term care or senior care nursing leadership
- Rotational or block-schedule assignments
- Temporary-to-permanent opportunities
- Nursing stabilization or turnaround assignments
- Short-term leadership, education, or workforce support
The schedule, compensation, relocation assistance, housing, travel requirements, call expectations, clinical scope, reporting structure, and employment arrangement will be explained before you decide whether to move forward with a specific opportunity.
Alaska's healthcare organizations serve communities spread across mountains, forests, tundra, rivers, islands, and thousands of miles of coastline.
Some communities are connected by highways. Others may be reached only by plane, boat, snowmachine, or seasonal transportation.
These distances make strong nursing leadership especially important.
In some communities, nurses are among the few healthcare professionals available locally. They may care for patients across the lifespan, support emergency stabilization, coordinate transport, manage complex conditions, and help families navigate care far from larger medical centers.
A strong nursing leader can help stabilize staffing, develop local talent, improve communication, strengthen quality, support employee well-being, and create a culture where nurses feel valued and prepared.
Nursing leadership in Alaska offers the opportunity to know your team, see the direct impact of your decisions, and help preserve quality healthcare across an entire community or region.
You may help mentor a new nurse, rebuild a department, improve retention, strengthen patient safety, support a remote clinical team, or help keep a vital service available closer to home.
The work requires resilience, adaptability, cultural humility, sound judgment, and a genuine commitment to supporting the people who deliver care.
By applying through this page, you are joining the confidential Rural Staffing Services Talent Network.
You may be considered for current or upcoming nursing leadership opportunities throughout Alaska that align with your experience, goals, preferred region, and availability.
Please submit your resume and let us know:
- Which Alaska communities or regions you would consider
- Whether you are interested in road-system, rural, remote, frontier, village-based, or regional organizations
- Whether you are open to relocation, regional travel, rotational schedules, or fly-in assignments
- Whether you are interested in permanent, interim, rotational, or multiple types of opportunities
- Your experience with rural hospitals, Critical Access Hospitals, FQHCs, Tribal health organizations, regional systems, clinics, long-term care, or community healthcare organizations
- Which position or community you were viewing on RSSJobs.org
Our team personally reviews each application. When we identify an opportunity that may be a strong match, we will contact you directly to share more about the organization, community, nursing team, clinical needs, travel or housing considerations, and next steps.
