What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Runway Model, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Runway Model, you need excellent physical fitness, body awareness, and the ability to maintain industry-standard measurements, often supported by prior modeling experience or agency representation. Familiarity with runway techniques, posing, and sometimes fashion show software or booking systems is typically required. Confidence, professionalism, and the ability to take direction and work under pressure are crucial soft skills for this role. These skills and qualities ensure a model can effectively represent designers' visions, adapt to fast-paced show environments, and maintain a strong professional reputation.

What are some common challenges faced by runway models during fashion shows?

Runway models often encounter challenges such as adapting quickly to last-minute outfit changes, maintaining poise and confidence under intense pressure, and walking in unfamiliar or difficult footwear. The fast-paced environment requires strong time-management skills and the ability to stay calm amid hectic backstage activity. Additionally, models must work closely with designers, stylists, and other models to ensure the show's success, often relying on clear communication and teamwork.

What are runway models?

Runway models, also known as catwalk models, are professionals who showcase clothing, accessories, and designs on a runway during fashion shows. They are hired by designers, fashion houses, or brands to present the latest trends and collections to buyers, media, and the public. Runway models are expected to walk with confidence, maintain a certain physique, and embody the designer's vision. Their work plays a crucial role in setting fashion trends and influencing the industry. In addition to walking, they may also pose for photographs and interact with stylists, makeup artists, and photographers.

Mechanical Design Engineer – Industrial Equipment & Material Handling Systems

Seeking a detail-oriented Mechanical Design Engineer to design overhead crane systems, runway structures, monorails, jib cranes, custom lifting equipment, and industrial machinery. This role requires strong experience with SolidWorks 3D modeling, mechanical design, structural calculations, and material handling equipment. The ideal candidate will have a strong engineering foundation, the ability to interpret technical drawings, and experience supporting projects from concept and quoting through fabrication, installation, and field support.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Engineering & Design

  • Design overhead crane systems, runway structures, monorails, jibs, and custom lifting equipment
  • Design mechanical systems including conveyors, manipulators, fixtures, and custom industrial machinery
  • Perform structural calculations and mechanical calculations, including load paths, component sizing, and system capacity
  • Select and size mechanical components such as bearings, gearboxes, motors, drives, shafts, and fasteners
  • Apply applicable engineering codes and standards, including CMAA, AISC, ASCE, OSHA, and manufacturer guidelines
  • Evaluate customer requirements, site conditions, and operational constraints to develop compliant and practical designs

3D Modeling & Drafting

  • Generate fabrication drawings, weldments, and bills of materials from SolidWorks models
  • Produce layout drawings, installation details, and interface drawings for industrial equipment projects
  • Review drawings for accuracy, constructability, completeness, and compliance with project requirements
  • Utilize AutoCAD as needed for layouts, legacy drawings, or project coordination

Project & Shop Support

  • Support sales during quoting and concept development with layouts, technical input, and design recommendations
  • Support project managers during project execution, revisions, and coordination
  • Provide engineering support to fabrication and installation teams
  • Assist with troubleshooting and resolution of design-related field issues
  • Communicate effectively with internal teams to ensure designs meet customer, shop, and installation requirements

Process Improvement

  • Assist with development and maintenance of standard details, templates, and calculation tools
  • Participate in internal design reviews and continuous improvement efforts
  • Support documentation of engineering best practices, lessons learned, and design standards
  • Help improve design efficiency, drawing quality, and repeatability across custom equipment projects

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related engineering field
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks for 3D modeling, assemblies, and detailed mechanical design
  • Mechanical engineering background with understanding of machinery, components, and assemblies
  • 2+ years of relevant engineering experience in industrial equipment, material handling, machinery design, or structural systems
  • Strong understanding of loads, structural behavior, mechanical fundamentals, and system capacity
  • Ability to read and interpret architectural drawings, structural drawings, and equipment drawings
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects, deadlines, and design priorities
  • Working knowledge of CMAA, AISC, ASCE, OSHA, or related industrial design standards preferred
  • Experience with fabrication drawings, weldments, bill of materials, and shop support preferred
