In summary, a Ruby On Rails Contractor is typically a freelance professional hired for specific projects, offering flexibility and diverse experience. A Ruby On Rails Developer usually works as a full-time employee, focusing on long-term application development within a company. Both roles require strong Rails skills but differ mainly in employment type and work setup.

What are Ruby on Rails contractors?

Ruby on Rails contractors are professionals who specialize in building web applications using the Ruby on Rails framework. They are typically hired on a contract basis, either for short-term projects, specific features, or to augment in-house development teams. These contractors handle tasks such as backend development, API integration, database management, and sometimes front-end work, all centered around the Rails ecosystem. Their expertise allows businesses to rapidly develop, maintain, or upgrade web applications efficiently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Ruby On Rails Contractor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Ruby On Rails Contractor, you need strong programming skills in Ruby, expertise in the Rails framework, and a solid understanding of web application architecture, typically backed by experience or a relevant degree. Familiarity with tools like Git, PostgreSQL/MySQL, RESTful APIs, and deployment platforms such as Heroku or AWS is often required. Excellent problem-solving, time management, and communication skills help contractors efficiently collaborate with clients and teams. These skills ensure high-quality, maintainable code and successful project delivery in competitive, fast-paced environments.

What are some common challenges Ruby On Rails Contractors face when joining a new development team?

Ruby On Rails Contractors often need to quickly adapt to existing codebases and team workflows, which can pose challenges if documentation is sparse or coding standards differ. Additionally, contractors must rapidly build rapport with permanent team members to ensure smooth collaboration, particularly in agile environments. Balancing multiple projects or client expectations can also require strong time management and communication skills. Being proactive about asking questions and clarifying requirements can help overcome these hurdles and contribute effectively from the start.

Staff Software Engineer

Rugiet Health

Austin, TX โ€ข On-site

Full-time

Posted 2 days ago

Job description

About Rugiet

Rugiet is a high-growth, innovative telemedicine company pioneering patented solutions in the men's health space. We are dedicated to delivering accessible, effective, and patient-centric healthcare. As we continue to expand our suite of products and market presence, we rely on data-driven strategy and compelling messaging to connect patients with our life-changing solutions.

Role Overview

Rugiet is looking for a Staff Software Engineer who combines deep technical expertise with strong product instincts and a bias for ownership. Youโ€™ll be a senior individual contributor driving architecture, reliability, and developer experience across our stack.

You will partner with engineering, product, design, and operations to set technical direction, lead complex projects end-to-end, and raise the bar for code quality, observability, and automation. Youโ€™ll also play a key role in evolving how we use AI and lightweight automation to reduce toil and ship high-quality features faster.

Key Outcomes (first 12โ€“18 months)
  • Establish and socialize a clear technical direction for our core Rails + React systems (architecture, data, and reliability).
  • Reduce mean time to resolution (MTTR) and incident recurrence through improved observability and rootโ€‘cause fixes.
  • Lead 2โ€“3 highโ€‘impact, crossโ€‘functional projects from design through launch and iteration.
  • Materially improve developer experience (DX) via tooling, CI/CD, and AIโ€‘assisted workflowsโ€”measurably reducing cycle time and manual toil.
  • Mentor engineers across the team; help level up design reviews, code quality, and system thinking.
What Youโ€™ll Do

Technical Leadership & Architecture

  • Own architecture and technical design for complex initiatives across the Rails + React stack, balancing pragmatism with longโ€‘term maintainability.
  • Break down ambiguous product and platform problems into clear technical plans, milestones, and tradeโ€‘offs.
  • Evolve our system boundaries (services, modules, contracts) as the product and team scale.
  • Define standards for code quality, testing, observability, and performanceโ€”and ensure they are applied consistently across teams.
  • Make thoughtful buildโ€‘vsโ€‘buy decisions and introduce new technologies where they create real leverage.
Product & Delivery
  • Partner closely with Product, Design, Operations, and Clinical teams to turn business goals into resilient, scalable solutions.
  • Lead endโ€‘toโ€‘end delivery for critical projects: discovery, design reviews, implementation, rollout, and postโ€‘launch iteration.
  • Balance shortโ€‘term feature delivery with longerโ€‘term platform investments (e.g., refactors, migrations, performance and reliability work).
  • Communicate clearly with technical and nonโ€‘technical stakeholders, including risks, tradeโ€‘offs, and timelines.
Team Leadership & Mentorship
  • Mentor senior and midโ€‘level engineers through design reviews, pairing, and thoughtful feedback.
  • Model excellent engineering practices: clear RFCs, highโ€‘quality PRs, testable designs, and crisp incident writeโ€‘ups.
  • Help shape our engineering culture: pragmatic, kind, direct, and oriented around outcomes rather than tools.
  • Contribute to hiring and onboarding by participating in interviews, improving our interview loops, and helping new teammates ramp quickly.
Our Stack
  • Backend: Ruby on Rails, Sidekiq/background jobs, PostgreSQL.
  • Frontend: React (and, where appropriate, Next.js) with modern component patterns and testing.
  • Tooling & Platform: GitHub, CI/CD, cloud infrastructure (AWS, Vercel), monitoring/observability tools.
Required Qualifications
  • 10+ years of professional experience building and operating production web applications, including substantial time at a Senior/Lead level.
  • Deep handsโ€‘on experience with Ruby on Rails and React (or very similar frameworks), including APIs, background jobs, data modeling, and performance tuning.
  • Strong system design and architecture skills: modularization, data modeling, scaling strategies, and tradeโ€‘off analysis.
  • Proven track record leading complex, crossโ€‘functional projectsโ€”from ambiguous requirements to successful production rollout.
  • Experience owning production systems: incident response, rootโ€‘cause analysis, and designing durable fixes.
  • Comfortable working in fastโ€‘paced, productโ€‘driven environments with iterative delivery and tight feedback loops.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to explain technical concepts clearly to nonโ€‘engineers and drive alignment.
Nice to Have
  • Experience in telehealth, healthcare, or other regulated domains, with awareness of secure data handling and privacy requirements.
  • Experience with Next.js and modern front-end performance techniques (SSR, ISR, codeโ€‘splitting, image optimization).
  • Familiarity with modern testing approaches and tools.
  • Prior experience in a Staff or Principal Engineer role, or as a Lead Engineer responsible for technical direction and mentoring.
  • Handsโ€‘on use of AIโ€‘assisted development tools (Cursor, Claude Code, Open AI, modern LLMs) to improve velocity, quality, and reliabilityโ€”not just autocomplete.
  • Experience improving developer experience (DX): build tooling, CI/CD pipelines, repo structure, and documentation.
How You Work
  • Problemโ€‘first: you clarify the real problem, constraints, and tradeโ€‘offs before committing to a solution.
  • Systems thinker: you consider downstream effects, failure modes, and longโ€‘term maintainability.
  • Pragmatic: you favor simple, observable solutions and iterate rather than overโ€‘design.
  • Ownership mindset: you care about outcomes, not just tickets; you follow through after launch and leave systems better than you found them.
  • Multiplier: you raise the bar for those around you through mentorship, thoughtful feedback, and good technical defaults.
  • Bias to automate: you turn recurring issues and manual workflows into scripts, tools, and platform capabilities.
To Apply
  • If you are excited by the opportunity to make a significant impact on a growing healthcare company by organizing and optimizing our creative output, please submit your resume and a cover letter detailing your relevant experience and why you are a great fit for this role.
