What are Ruby on Rails contractors?

Ruby on Rails contractors are professionals who specialize in building web applications using the Ruby on Rails framework. They are typically hired on a contract basis, either for short-term projects, specific features, or to augment in-house development teams. These contractors handle tasks such as backend development, API integration, database management, and sometimes front-end work, all centered around the Rails ecosystem. Their expertise allows businesses to rapidly develop, maintain, or upgrade web applications efficiently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Ruby On Rails Contractor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Ruby On Rails Contractor, you need strong programming skills in Ruby, expertise in the Rails framework, and a solid understanding of web application architecture, typically backed by experience or a relevant degree. Familiarity with tools like Git, PostgreSQL/MySQL, RESTful APIs, and deployment platforms such as Heroku or AWS is often required. Excellent problem-solving, time management, and communication skills help contractors efficiently collaborate with clients and teams. These skills ensure high-quality, maintainable code and successful project delivery in competitive, fast-paced environments.

What are some common challenges Ruby On Rails Contractors face when joining a new development team?

Ruby On Rails Contractors often need to quickly adapt to existing codebases and team workflows, which can pose challenges if documentation is sparse or coding standards differ. Additionally, contractors must rapidly build rapport with permanent team members to ensure smooth collaboration, particularly in agile environments. Balancing multiple projects or client expectations can also require strong time management and communication skills. Being proactive about asking questions and clarifying requirements can help overcome these hurdles and contribute effectively from the start.

Job description

Are you excited by the challenge of building secure, scalable software in a rapidly evolving cybersecurity landscape? Digital Boundary Group is looking for a Software Developer to join our growing Research and Development team!

At Digital Boundary Group, we specialize in security assessments and penetration testing, helping organizations around the world strengthen their security posture. Our team is made up of exceptionally talented, curious, and driven professionals who thrive on learning, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

Our R&D team is a high performing group responsible for designing, enhancing, and maintaining the internal tools used by our cybersecurity experts. We are looking to add a developer who not only enjoys coding, but also has a strong interest in DevOps, automation, and security best practices. Someone who is eager to contribute to secure development pipelines and tooling that supports real-world offensive and defensive security work.

This role offers flexibility to work from home, in a hybrid arrangement, or in-office at our London, Ontario location.

What You'll Do

  • Develop and enhance in-house software tools that support penetration testing, social engineering, and reporting, using skills gained through education and hands-on experience.
  • Contribute to application-level vulnerability management by identifying, fixing, and validating security issues within the codebase and third-party dependencies.
  • Work with the team to improve and automate CI/CD pipelines, helping reduce manual effort and streamline build, test, and deployment processes.
  • Assist with deployments and releases and help maintain development and QA environments (including test labs and tooling) to ensure reliable delivery into production.
  • Collaborate with R&D, the security team, and other stakeholders in solution planning, design discussions, and requirement reviews.
  • Monitor in-house applications and help respond to outages, bugs, and unexpected issues.
  • Perform quality assurance, troubleshooting, and bug fixing with attention to detail and a security-first approach.

What You'll Bring

  • 4+ years of professional software development experience building and supporting production applications, with strong proficiency in languages and frameworks such as Ruby/Ruby on Rails, Python, C/C++, C#, and JavaScript.
  • Diploma or degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Programming, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Hands-on experience addressing application-level vulnerabilities, including secure coding practices and dependency management.
  • Practical experience working with CI/CD pipelines and an interest in automating build, test, and deployment workflows.
  • Familiarity with deployments and release processes across development, QA, and production environments.
  • Experience maintaining or supporting development and QA environments, including internal tools or test labs.
  • Working knowledge of DevSecOps concepts, including OWASP Top 10 and security-first development practices.
  • Exposure to tools such as Git-based workflows, Docker, CI/CD platforms (GitHub Actions or GitLab CI), Ansible, or scripting with Bash/PowerShell.
