What is an RRT CRT?

RRTs (Registered Respiratory Therapists) and CRTs (Certified Respiratory Therapists) are healthcare professionals who specialize in assessing, treating, and caring for patients with breathing or cardiopulmonary disorders. CRT is the entry-level credential, while RRT is an advanced credential that often requires additional education and passing a higher-level exam. Both roles work under the direction of physicians and play a vital part in acute and chronic respiratory care in settings like hospitals, clinics, and home health. RRTs and CRTs perform tasks such as administering oxygen, managing ventilators, and educating patients about lung health.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be an RRT CRT?

To thrive as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) or Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT), you need a thorough understanding of respiratory care, patient assessment, and clinical procedures, supported by an associate's degree and passing the NBRC credentialing exams. Familiarity with ventilators, pulmonary function testing equipment, and electronic health record (EHR) systems is typically required. Excellent communication, empathy, and critical thinking skills help you interact effectively with patients and collaborate with healthcare teams. These competencies ensure accurate patient care, timely interventions, and strong teamwork in fast-paced clinical settings.

What challenges do RRT CRTs face in acute care settings?

Respiratory therapists in acute care settings often encounter challenges such as managing high patient volumes, responding to frequent emergencies, and adapting quickly to rapidly changing patient conditions. They must be comfortable working under pressure, collaborating closely with nurses and physicians, and making swift clinical decisions. Additionally, balancing routine respiratory care with critical interventions, such as managing ventilators or performing airway clearance, requires strong organizational and communication skills.
