What is an RPG developer?

An RPG developer is a software programmer who specializes in creating role-playing games, designing game mechanics, storylines, and interactive environments. They often work with game engines like Unity or Unreal and require skills in programming languages such as C++ or C#. RPG developers may also collaborate with artists and designers to produce engaging gaming experiences.

What are RPG Developers?

RPG Developers are software professionals who specialize in creating, maintaining, and optimizing applications using the RPG (Report Program Generator) programming language. RPG is primarily used on IBM midrange systems, such as the IBM i (formerly AS/400). These developers are responsible for designing business applications, troubleshooting legacy code, and integrating new technologies with existing systems. Their work is crucial in industries that rely on IBM systems for critical business operations, including finance, manufacturing, and logistics.

Is it hard to find a job as a game developer?

Finding a job as an RPG developer can be competitive, but strong skills in programming languages like C++ or C#, experience with game engines such as Unity or Unreal, and a solid portfolio can improve employment prospects. Entry-level positions may be limited, so continuous learning and networking are important for success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an RPG Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an RPG Developer, you need strong programming skills in RPG IV (ILE RPG), familiarity with IBM i systems (AS/400), and experience in business application development. Proficiency in tools such as IBM Rational Developer, SQL, and CL programming, and knowledge of modern integration technologies are commonly required, along with relevant certifications in IBM i or RPG programming. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for understanding user requirements and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. These abilities are crucial for delivering reliable, scalable solutions that support business operations on legacy and modern IBM i platforms.

What is the difference between Rpg Developer vs Game Programmer?

While both Rpg Developers and Game Programmers work in game development, Rpg Developers specialize in creating role-playing game features, storylines, and mechanics. Game Programmers have a broader scope, working on various game types, including RPGs. The key difference lies in the focus area within game development projects.

What are some common challenges RPG Developers face when balancing storytelling and gameplay mechanics?

RPG Developers often encounter the challenge of integrating deep, engaging narratives with interactive gameplay systems. Achieving a balance requires close collaboration between writers, designers, and programmers to ensure that story elements enhance, rather than hinder, player agency and pacing. Developers must also consider technical constraints, such as branching dialogue or quest logic, which can impact both narrative coherence and game performance. These challenges make strong teamwork and adaptability essential in the role.

Is RPG programming easy to learn?

RPG programming, used for business applications and legacy systems, has a learning curve that depends on prior programming experience and familiarity with mainframe environments. It involves understanding specific syntax and concepts, but with dedicated study and practice, beginners can learn the basics. Knowledge of related tools like IBM i or AS/400 systems can also be helpful.

How much do RPG programmers make?

RPG programmers typically earn between $60,000 and $120,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and the complexity of projects. Skilled programmers with knowledge of game engines and scripting languages tend to command higher salaries, especially in competitive markets.

Job description

MEDHOST, a division of Harris, is seeking a Senior Software Engineer, IBM i / RPG, to design, develop, modernize, test, and support enterprise healthcare software solutions on the IBM i platform, also known as AS/400 or iSeries.

This role requires recent hands on experience developing and supporting RPG applications in a production IBM i environment. Candidates must have personally written, modified, debugged, tested, and supported ILE RPG / RPGLE code. RPG listed only as a general skill, legacy exposure, training topic, or resume keyword will not meet the minimum requirements for this role.

The successful candidate will own complex product enhancements, resolve production issues, contribute to modernization initiatives, mentor developers, and help improve the reliability, maintainability, and scalability of MEDHOST's healthcare software products.

Candidates may be asked to deliver a short technical presentation during the interview process. Experience supporting long lived commercial software products or enterprise production systems is strongly preferred.

This remote role welcomes candidates anywhere in the US. Candidates must be able to collaborate during core Central Time business hours.

Salary:

110K - 145K

What your impact will be:

  • Design, construct, test, debug, and support technical solutions on the IBM i platform.
  • Develop and maintain applications using ILE RPG / RPGLE, CL, embedded SQL, Db2 for i, SQL procedures, and user-defined functions.
  • Own complex product enhancements, defect resolution, production issues, and assigned project components.
  • Analyze existing IBM i applications and recommend practical improvements to reliability, maintainability, performance, and supportability.
  • Contribute to modernization efforts by improving legacy RPG code structure, reducing technical debt, and supporting more modular, SQL-driven application design.
  • Apply engineering standards for code quality, testing, configuration management, documentation, security, and release readiness.
  • Provide accurate effort estimates and deliver assigned work within agreed schedules.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve high-complexity application, data, batch, integration, and performance issues.
  • Participate in architecture, design, and technical review discussions for IBM i applications and related integrations.
  • Identify system, application, and engineering process deficiencies and recommend improvements.
  • Help prioritize development tasks for junior and mid-level staff.
  • Mentor other developers through technical guidance, design review, troubleshooting support, and code quality feedback.
  • Collaborate with product owners, QA, DBAs, architects, support, implementation, and other engineering teams to deliver reliable product changes.
  • Maintain the effectiveness and implementation of the MEDHOST Quality Management System and meet applicable regulatory requirements as needed.
  • Perform other duties as required to support organizational and product needs.

Candidate Screening Expectations

During the interview process, candidates may be asked to discuss a recent RPG/RPGLE enhancement they personally delivered, including the business purpose, technical components involved, testing approach, and deployment process.

Candidates should be able to clearly explain their direct contributions to IBM i and RPG development projects.

What we are looking for:

  • 7+ years of commercial software or enterprise application development experience.
  • 5+ years of hands-on IBM i development experience.
  • Recent professional experience developing, maintaining, debugging, and supporting production RPG applications on IBM i, including RPG/RPGLE work within the last 3 years.
  • Strong working knowledge of ILE RPG / RPGLE, including fixed-format and/or free-form RPG, CL, embedded SQL, Db2 for i, physical files, logical files, source physical files, service programs, batch processing, and IBM i job troubleshooting.
  • Strong SQL skills, including Db2 for i queries, joins, stored procedures, SQL functions, data analysis, and performance troubleshooting.

  • Experience with software version control, change management, controlled promotion, and release processes.
  • Understanding of testing practices, including unit, system, integration, regression, and performance testing.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and technical writing skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor, coach, and guide other developers.
  • Ability to work independently, manage priorities, communicate risks early, and deliver within agreed timelines.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field preferred.
  • Equivalent professional experience developing and supporting enterprise software solutions will be considered.

What would make you stand out:

  • Experience modernizing legacy RPG applications.
  • Experience with free-form RPG and SQL-first development patterns.
  • Experience with modular IBM i design, including service programs, procedures, modules, reusable business logic, or layered application design.
  • Experience with RDi, Aldon, Git, Jira, Confluence, or similar development and delivery tools.
  • Experience with healthcare software, financial systems, billing, EHR, clinical workflows, regulated software, or other business-critical production environments.

  • Experience creating technical documentation, design notes, troubleshooting guides, or knowledge-transfer materials.
  • Experience with long-lived commercial software products or enterprise production systems.

What we can offer:

  • 3 weeks' vacation and 5 personal days
  • Comprehensive Medical, Dental, and Vision benefits starting from your first day of employment
  • Employee stock ownership and RRSP/401k matching programs
  • Lifestyle rewards
  • Remote work and more!
