Routesetting information

What is a routesetter?

Routesetting is the process of designing and creating climbing routes or problems in a gym or outdoor facility. Routesetters use climbing holds and volumes to craft engaging, safe, and progressive challenges for climbers of all skill levels. The job involves physical labor, creativity, and an understanding of movement, biomechanics, and risk management. Routesetters also maintain and adjust routes based on climber feedback and facility needs.

What does a routesetter do?

A typical day for a Routesetter involves planning and constructing new climbing routes or boulder problems, working both individually and as part of a team. This includes selecting and installing holds, testing the routes for safety and appropriate difficulty, and making adjustments as needed based on feedback from climbers or supervisors. Routesetters may also participate in cleaning and maintaining climbing walls, inventorying holds, and collaborating with gym staff to ensure a diverse and engaging set of routes are available for all skill levels. The role is physically demanding and requires careful attention to detail, but it is also highly creative and collaborative, often offering opportunities to design routes for competitions or special events.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a routesetter?

To thrive as a Routesetter, you need strong climbing proficiency, excellent spatial awareness, and knowledge of movement and safety techniques, often supported by hands-on experience or industry certifications. Familiarity with power tools, harness systems, and route-setting equipment is essential, as well as an understanding of safety regulations, such as those from the Climbing Business Journal or CWA. Creativity, problem-solving, teamwork, and effective communication set exceptional routesetters apart. These skills ensure that climbing routes are safe, engaging, and accessible for a range of abilities while fostering collaboration in a dynamic, physically demanding environment.

How do you become a routesetter?

To become a routesetter, individuals typically gain experience in climbing and develop skills in route design and problem-solving. Many start as climbing instructors or assistants, learn to use route-setting tools, and may pursue certifications or training offered by climbing organizations or gyms to improve their skills and understanding of safety standards.
