Job description

Climbing Wall Route Setter - Student Hourly

Route Setters are members of the Outdoor Pursuits (ODP) program who work at the Ambler Student Recreation Fitness Center's "Chalk Rock" Climbing Wall. In collaboration with the ODP Program Manager and/or the Assistant Director of Outdoor Pursuits, Route Setters are responsible for fully resetting routes on the 42 foot roped wall and the bouldering wall two to three times per year. Applicants should possess intermediate to advanced rock climbing skills. Experience or knowledge in wall maintenance, routesetting, and the ability to learn and design safe, engaging, and appropriately challenging climbing routes are essential. Route Setters do not set routes while the wall is open to climbers. As a result, the position offers flexible scheduling, with work taking place only when the wall is closed. Staff members must be accountable, manage their time effectively, and complete all assigned work within the designated timeframe.

Job Description

80% - Routesetting

  • Placing Holds
  • Choosing screw types
  • Taping marking routes
  • Rating routes

10% - Hold Maintenance

  • Cleaning holds
  • Evaluating holds for excessive damage

10% - Wall Maintenance

  • Checking hold holes for damage
  • Checking/evaluating quickdraws for wear and tear, loose gates, etc.
Required Qualifications
  1. During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: (1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or (2) be pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or (3) be enrolled in summer session or (4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).
Preferred Qualifications
  1. CPR/AED certification (can be completed up to 30 days after being hired).
  2. Past experience of climbing and route setting and a knowledge of climbing equipment and outdoor equipment preferred.
  3. Work Study eligible.
Employment Conditions

(1) Student employees are not eligible for remote work arrangements unless an exception is approved by the unit leadership and HR. (2) This is an hourly/non-exempt position. A student employee cannot hold an hourly/non-exempt position and a salaried/exempt graduate or undergraduate position (GRA/GTA/GA/RUA/RGA) concurrently.
