What is a route manager?

Route Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing and optimizing delivery or service routes for companies, such as waste management, logistics, or transportation firms. They ensure that routes are efficient, cost-effective, and meet customer service standards. Their duties often include supervising drivers, scheduling, handling customer issues, and implementing improvements to route structures. Route Managers play a key role in maximizing productivity and minimizing operational costs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a route manager, and why are they important?

A Route Manager needs strong organizational skills, logistical knowledge, and typically a background in transportation management or related fields. Familiarity with route planning software, GPS tracking systems, and sometimes a commercial driver's license (CDL) are commonly required. Excellent leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills help manage drivers and ensure customer satisfaction. These abilities are crucial for optimizing operations, minimizing costs, and maintaining efficient, reliable service delivery.

What are some common challenges route managers face when coordinating multiple delivery routes, and how can these be effectively managed?

Route Managers often encounter challenges such as adapting to last-minute schedule changes, optimizing routes for efficiency, and addressing unexpected issues like vehicle breakdowns or traffic delays. Success in this role requires strong organizational skills, real-time problem-solving, and effective communication with drivers and dispatchers. Leveraging route optimization software and maintaining open channels with team members helps Route Managers respond quickly and keep operations running smoothly.

Job description

We're looking for a hands-on Division Manager to lead a growing service and vending operation in Somerset, Wisconsin. This is a newly created position with an opportunity to take ownership of the division from the ground up.

This is not a desk-only management role. You'll oversee the operation while also working in the field, supporting routes, handling collections, solving service issues, and making sure the business is operating efficiently and profitably.

What You'll Do:
  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Somerset division
  • Lead and manage 2 Service Technicians and 2 Vending/Route team members
  • Serve as the lead Service Route Technician when needed
  • Manage route performance, scheduling, and service coverage
  • Handle and oversee collections, payments, fees, and account reconciliation
  • Ensure customer accounts are current and discrepancies are resolved
  • Develop, implement, and enforce SOPs
  • Establish and track KPIs for service, routes, collections, and team performance
  • Monitor equipment uptime and recurring service issues
  • Oversee parts, inventory, purchasing, and operational controls
  • Train, coach, and hold employees accountable
  • Build strong relationships with customers and location partners
  • Troubleshoot problems in the field and ensure issues are resolved quickly
  • Provide ownership with regular reporting on division performance
What We're Looking For:
  • 3-5+ years of experience in route operations, vending, amusement/gaming, field service, equipment service, or a similar operation
  • Previous leadership or supervisory experience
  • Strong mechanical and troubleshooting aptitude
  • Experience managing routes, technicians, inventory, or field employees
  • Comfortable working with collections, cash controls, billing, and financial accountability
  • Strong understanding of SOPs and KPI-driven operations
  • Highly organized with excellent follow-through
  • Comfortable holding people accountable and making decisions
  • Willing to be hands-on and jump into the field when needed
  • Entrepreneurial mentality - someone who can run the division like their own business
The Opportunity:

This is an opportunity to step into a newly created leadership position and help build the Somerset operation the right way from day one. You'll have responsibility for the people, equipment, routes, customers, collections, and overall performance of the division.

If you're a hands-on operations leader who understands field service and route-based businesses and wants the autonomy to build and lead a division, we'd love to talk with you.
