Employment Type:

Job Profile:
Clinical Assistant Professor
Job Summary:
The Department of Medical Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM) invites applications for a Clinical Track, full-time, renewable Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor position within the Emergency and Critical Care Section of the UW Veterinary Care Hospital. The successful candidate will join the current team of four clinical track faculty who are responsible for teaching, research, and clinical service on the UW-Madison campus. The SVM is a collegial, collaborative environment that offers specialty care with board-certified experts in allied services including anesthesia and pain management, cardiology, dentistry and oral surgery, dermatology, diagnostic imaging, internal medicine, nephrology/urology (as part of the extracorporeal therapies unit), neurology, medical and radiation oncology, ophthalmology, anatomic and clinical pathology, primary care, special species, and soft tissue, oncologic and orthopedic surgery. The hospital also has a dedicated licensed clinical social worker who meets with clients and offers support groups.
The successful candidate will participate in the clinical activities of the teaching hospital, including the provision of patient care and instruction and supervision of veterinary students, interns, and residents. Availability and willingness to consult with referring veterinarians and clients, provide supervision of the emergency and critical care services, and collaborate with other services within the hospital are vitally important. Approximately 31,000 small animal patients are evaluated at UW Veterinary Care annually. The combined Emergency Medicine and Critical Care caseload continues to grow steadily, currently approximating 8,000 cases per year. The Critical Care service also provides collaboration, consultation, and procedural support for critically ill patients hospitalized by other small animal specialties in an open concept critical care unit.
The team moved into a newly constructed teaching hospital in June 2024, which has further enhanced our quality of care and allowed us to function in a markedly expanded footprint. This faculty position is newly offered, expanding our faculty team to support the growing number and complexity of cases in the UW Veterinary Care Small Animal Hospital. In addition to faculty members, the Emergency Medicine and Critical Care team includes 6 residents, 12 rotating interns, 22 certified veterinary technicians, 16 assistants, and 2 client care liaisons.
The Emergency Room and Critical Care Unit are adjacent to spaces which support the unit including the Isolation Unit, Intermediate Care Ward, ER Procedure Room, Ventilation/Dialysis Room, Point-Of-Care Laboratory, and ECC Rounds Room.
Our critical care unit, an open-concept ICU, is equipped to enable advanced care for critically ill patients with routine use of high-flow nasal oxygen, mechanical ventilation, telemetry, a well-equipped in-house blood bank, and many other related services. Members of the ECC and Internal Medicine teams work together as the extracorporeal therapies (ECT) unit and offer services including intermittent hemodialysis, plasmapheresis, and hemoperfusion. The successful applicant is welcome, but not required, to participate in the ECT unit.
Key Job Responsibilities:
