Night Shift Remote maintains consistent night hours, suitable for roles needing overnight coverage. Both roles are remote and often require similar skills, but their schedules differ significantly, impacting work-life balance and productivity.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a rotating schedule remote position, and why are they important?

Thriving in a rotating schedule remote role requires strong time management, self-discipline, and adaptability, along with relevant job-specific qualifications. Familiarity with remote collaboration tools like Slack, Zoom, and project management software is typically expected. Excellent communication skills, reliability, and the ability to handle changing work hours help individuals excel in this environment. These competencies are crucial for maintaining productivity, meeting deadlines, and ensuring smooth coordination with distributed teams across varying shifts.

What does it mean to work a rotating schedule remote job?

A rotating schedule remote job means that while you work from a location outside of a traditional office (such as your home), your work hours change according to a set rotation. For example, you might work mornings for a week, then evenings the next, or alternate between weekdays and weekends. This type of schedule is common in industries that require 24/7 coverage or flexible service hours, such as customer support or IT. It offers flexibility but also requires adaptability to changing hours. Communication and time management are important skills for succeeding in this type of role.

How do rotating schedules impact work-life balance for remote employees?

Rotating schedules in remote positions can offer flexibility, but they also require strong time management and adaptability. Employees may need to adjust to varying shift times, which can affect routines and personal commitments. Proactive communication with your team and utilizing digital scheduling tools can help maintain a healthy work-life balance. Many companies support remote workers with resources to manage shift changes, but it's important to clarify expectations and self-manage downtime between rotations.

Job description

DevOps Engineer III

Job Number: 778

This is a remote position.

Ad Hoc is a technology company that empowers organizations to deliver scalable, impactful digital services. Using modern, agile methods, our team creates products that meet people’s needs and transform their experience of government.

Work on things that matter

Our collaborations have shaped some of the defining moments in public-sector service delivery. We’ve helped build products that connect Veterans to tailored services, help millions access affordable health care, and support important programs like Head Start. As we work with agencies to deliver critical services, we’re also changing how the government approaches technology.

Built for a remote life

Our culture, communications, and tools are built for remote work, enabling us to bring together top talent nationwide. At Ad Hoc, remote life empowers our teams to design work environments that fit their lives and that foster flexibility and collaboration to achieve positive outcomes for our customers.

Committed to high expectations and a welcoming culture

Ad Hoc values acceptance, accountability, and humility. We aren’t heroes. We learn from our mistakes and improve the process for the next time. We build small, inclusive teams to collaborate closely with our partners to solve the right problems and deliver software that works.

The Federal Civilian business unit supports many customers spanning the federal, commercial, and nonprofit space. Our customers include NASA, the General Services Administration, Office of Personnel Management, the Library of Congress, Health & Human Services, and the FDIC. We partner with these agencies to build new capabilities, deliver products, establish data as a strategic asset for informed decision-making, modernize legacy systems, and build the digital service infrastructure necessary to scale their mission impact.

Primary Responsibilities

DevOps Engineer III serves as an emerging individual contributor within a team, expanding your leadership, guidance, and mentoring skills. With the support and guidance of leadership, you will be responsible for supporting the goal of meeting scope, schedule, and delivery requirements. You will interact with stakeholders and utilize influential skills to drive improvements in DevOps processes and practices. Primary expectations of a DevOps Engineer III include:

  • Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines in GitLab, automate infrastructure provisioning with Terraform, and manage containerized deployments using Docker and AWS ECS
  • Create and maintain shared deployment tooling, pipeline templates, and Terraform modules that delivery teams across the program consume as self-service infrastructure
  • Integrate automated quality, security, and accessibility gates (SonarQube, SAST, container scanning, Trivy) into GitLab pipelines to enforce standards at every merge request
  • Configure monitoring and observability tooling, including CloudWatch dashboards and synthetic canaries, to support production visibility across environments
  • Support security vulnerability remediation by maintaining trusted base images, automating dependency updates via Renovatebot, and executing container scans in CI/CD pipelines
  • Participate in on-call and production triage rotations, supporting Tier 2/3 incident response and BCDR activities
  • Collaborate with cloud architects, backend engineers, and security teams to enforce infrastructure-as-code standards and prevent configuration drift
  • Author and maintain runbooks, deployment documentation, and ADRs as part of the Definition of Done
  • Support recruiting efforts by evaluating homework assignments and potentially assisting with interviews

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and 5+ years of relevant experience, or equivalent additional experience in lieu of a degree
  • Must meet federal suitability requirements and pass a background investigation as a condition of employment
  • Hands-on experience with AWS services including EC2, ECS, RDS, S3, Lambda, and CloudWatch across multi-account environments
  • Proficiency with Terraform for infrastructure-as-code provisioning and drift prevention
  • Demonstrated experience building and optimizing CI/CD pipelines in GitLab
  • Strong working knowledge of containerization using Docker and container orchestration on AWS ECS
  • Familiarity with DevSecOps practices including SAST, dependency scanning, and automated vulnerability remediation
  • Solid understanding of networking, virtualization, and cloud infrastructure fundamentals

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience managing infrastructure across 10+ AWS accounts with agency-level data isolation requirements
  • Familiarity with Kubernetes or comparable container orchestration platforms
  • Experience with observability tooling such as Grafana, New Relic, or CloudWatch synthetic monitoring
  • Prior work in federal environments or familiarity with FedRAMP, FISMA, or ATO processes
  • Experience supporting SAFe or scaled Agile delivery teams as a platform or infrastructure provider
