Join the YMCA of Central Ohio as an Assistant Teacher and play a vital role in shaping the growth and development of young learners in a supportive, mission-driven environment. This Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM-4:00 PM role follows the CCSD calendar, offering a consistent schedule aligned with school breaks and professional development days. In this position, you'll help bring engaging curriculum to life, build meaningful relationships with children and families, and contribute to a safe, inclusive classroom rooted in youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. You'll collaborate closely with experienced educators while gaining hands-on experience in lesson planning, child assessment, and program operations. If you're dependable, caring, and energized by working with children, this role offers both purpose and professional growth.
  1. Thinks, communicates and behaves as a cause-driven leader and role model for other staff and members when it comes to desired staff behaviors; promotes youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility in all job-related functions.
  2. Assists the lead teacher in supervising and implementing the curriculum including leading activities and assisting with lesson planning and assessments.
  3. Establishes relationships with families, staff and community partners. Greets each child and parent daily; communicates often and professionally with families, staff and children.
  4. Maintains program environment and equipment, assists with cleaning.
  5. Conducts informal and formal observations of children to inform curriculum and assessments.
  6. Offers children appropriate affection, verbal praise, and acceptance while providing clear and consistent expectations for behavior; sets firm limits with positive phrasing and actions when necessary.
  7. Assists in ensuring program's compliance with all YMCA, SUTQ, ODJFS licensing, grant and NAEYC requirements.
  8. Assists with establishing and monitoring individual child goals.
  9. Maintains prompt hours and follows procedures for absences.
  10. If applicable, complete duties as required by the Child and Adult Care Food program.
  11. Establishes, maintains, and provides documents needed for OPDN registry profile and licensing.
  12. Attends all staff meetings, specialized training and safety training.
  13. Participates in special events.
  14. Assists in recruiting children for the program and helps maintain required enrollment numbers.
  15. Assists with obtaining necessary paperwork from families.
  16. Assists Lead Teacher in meeting all classroom requirements.
  17. Professionally represents the Y at local elementary schools.
  18. Assists in administering required screenings.
  19. Maintains confidentiality with all student and school records.
  20. Enters data as requested by the Lead Teacher or Director.

Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Career Pathway Level as determined by Program's SUTQ requirements.
  • Must submit medical statement as required by ODJFS standards. Must obtain and keep current training certifications in first aid, communicable diseases, child abuse recognition & prevention required by ODJFS.
