Job description


Position Purpose
Drive the safe, efficient, and cost effective operation of the Rolling Mill by supporting daily production activities and ensuring plate and coil are processed to meet all customer specifications. Lead and execute equipment upgrade projects that enhance throughput, improve reliability, and strengthen overall safety performance across the mill.
Essential Responsibilities
Operational and Maintenance Support
Assist the Rolling Mill, Mechanical Maintenance and Electrical Maintenance Managers by:
  • Reducing equipment downtime and improving overall equipment utilization.
  • Developing departmental goals, objectives, and performance metrics.
  • Assis in creating and managing the department's capital plan.
  • Leading continuous improvement initiatives and ROCE-focused projects.
  • Enforcing company policies, procedures, and operational standards.
  • Planning, developing, and executing projects scheduled for planned outages.
  • Creating, reviewing, and updating JSA/SOP documentation.
  • Support operations personnel by addressing technical issues and requests.
  • Facilitating and participating in departmental meetings.

Equipment Monitoring, Tuning & Compliance
Monitor, tune, and ensure compliance with specifications and standards for:
  • Reheat furnace
  • Laminar flow system
  • Hot and cold plate levelers

Maintenance Coordination & Spare Management
Coordinate maintenance activities and manage spare parts inventory for:
  • Hot flying shear knives
  • Edger rolls and aprons
  • Down coiler components: pinch rolls, swivel gate, hold-down roll, table rolls/aprons
  • Wear plates on down-coiler approach guides
  • Pannier slab tag printer and Infosight coil tag printer
  • Mill work rolls
  • Mill back-up rolls
  • Steckel furnace drums
  • Work roll chocks

Roll Shape Monitoring & Pass Line Control
  • Measure, monitor, and record roll shape for:
    • Entry/exit top and bottom pinch rolls
    • Entry/exit top and bottom deflector rolls
    • Top and bottom down-coiler pinch rolls
  • Track back-up roll changes and calculate mill pass line.

Safety & Training Responsibilities
  • Participate in housekeeping tours to maintain a clean and safe work environment.
  • Conduct one Safety Hazard Recognition tour annually and assign corrective actions for findings.
  • Complete SAFESTART trainer certification and assist in training mill personnel.
  • Track all safety deliverables and report monthly progress to management.
  • Participate in investigations of accidents, incidents, and near-miss events.
  • Collect, log, and assign corrective actions for safety observations.
  • Collect and file LOTO documentation.

Education, Experience, and Competencies
Required
  • Associates degree (technical degree preferred)
  • Minimum of five years of experience in a steelmaking or heavy industrial environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Solid understanding of production planning and maintenance management systems.
  • Mid- to high-level computer proficiency (e.g., CMMS, data analysis tools, reporting systems).
  • Basic knowledge of metallurgy and material behavior.
  • Strong organizational, leadership, and prioritization abilities.
  • Ability to professionally interface with employees at all organizational levels.
  • Demonstrated capability to work effectively with minimal supervision and manage multiple tasks independently.
  • Regular and reliable attendance

Preferred
  • Bachelor of Science or Master of Science degree in engineering, computer science or a related discipline
  • Training in or strong understanding of Six Sigma methodologies and continuous improvement tools.

WORK ENVIRONEMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This position operates in both the office and industrial environment. The role routinely uses standard office equipment. This role is partially sedentary (average of 3 hours per day). This position will often require work in the industrial environment with exposure to heat/cold, walking, climbing stairs/ladders, noise and wearing safety equipment/clothing for protection from hazards.
The position requires the following vision and hearing capabilities:
  • Talking person to person, on the phone, and/or in group settings.
  • Hearing in person, on the phone, and/or in group settings.
  • Vision at near, mid, and far range.
  • Peripheral vision and depth perception.

The employee will occasionally be required to:

  • Walking 0-8 hours at a time; average 2 hours a day.
  • Alternate sitting and standing as needed.

The employee will be required to use the following machines or tools:
  • Desktop computer.
  • Printers.
  • Hand tools.

The employee will work in the following conditions:
  • Indoors.
  • In extreme heat and extreme cold.
  • In wet and humid conditions.
  • Amid fumes, dust, dirt, and smoke.

Position Type, Work Hours, and Travel Requirements
  • Position is full time, exempt
  • Position works day shift, Monday through Friday, occasional overtime or off hours will be required
  • Travel less than 5% of time in the field or at other SSAB locations
  • Office presence required
