What are the typical daily responsibilities of a Robotics Test Engineer?

A Robotics Test Engineer typically spends their day developing and executing test plans for robotic systems, analyzing data from hardware and software tests, and documenting results. They collaborate closely with design engineers to identify problems and propose solutions, as well as participate in troubleshooting and root-cause analysis. The role often involves setting up test environments, calibrating sensors, and using simulation tools to validate robotic behavior in different scenarios. Regular communication with quality assurance teams and participation in iterative development cycles are also key parts of the job.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Robotics Test Engineer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Robotics Test Engineer, you need strong knowledge of robotics systems, programming (such as C++, Python, or ROS), and experience with hardware and sensor integration, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with test automation tools, simulation software, and data analysis platforms, as well as certifications in robotics or quality assurance, are often required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and strong teamwork and communication skills help distinguish top candidates. These skills are essential for designing effective test plans, identifying system issues, and ensuring the reliable performance of complex robotic solutions.

What is a Robotics Test Engineer job?

A Robotics Test Engineer is responsible for evaluating and testing robotic systems to ensure functionality, performance, and safety. They design test plans, run automated and manual tests, analyze results, and document findings to improve system reliability. They work closely with developers, designers, and other engineers to identify issues and refine robotics hardware and software. Job description

Job Summary:
Pronto AI is a global leader in commercializing autonomous vehicle technology, focusing on making mining operations safer and more efficient. They are seeking a Robotics Test Engineer to design and build core test infrastructure, develop simulation-based testing frameworks, and maintain CI/CD pipelines for their autonomous systems.
Responsibilities:
โ€ข Design and build the core test infrastructure: harnesses, fixtures, runners, orchestration, and test artifact management for our ZMQ/Cap'n Proto middleware stack
โ€ข Build the simulation infrastructure that lets us run autonomy software against virtual scenarios, with deterministic playback and meaningful coverage of real-world conditions
โ€ข Build and maintain the testing pipeline that gates code changes โ€” unit, integration, simulation, and replay-based regression โ€” and integrate it cleanly into the developer workflow
โ€ข Build infrastructure that converts production logs into reproducible test cases the QA Engineer can curate and the dev team can run
Qualifications:
Required:
โ€ข 3+ years of software engineering experience, with significant work on testing infrastructure, developer tools, or distributed systems
โ€ข Strong Python โ€” you'll write substantial code, much of it touching production-adjacent infrastructure
โ€ข Experience designing and building automation pipelines (CI/CD, test orchestration, build systems)
โ€ข Deep familiarity with at least one large-scale software platform โ€” comfortable thinking in terms of APIs, abstractions, and platform usability
โ€ข Excellent debugging and systems thinking โ€” you'll be reasoning about failures across simulation, networking, serialization, and CI infrastructure
โ€ข Comfort building greenfield โ€” much of what you'll work on does not exist today
Preferred:
โ€ข Experience with robotics, autonomous vehicles, or other safety-critical systems
โ€ข Hands-on experience with simulation environments (Gazebo, CARLA, Isaac Sim, or proprietary)
โ€ข Familiarity with pub/sub messaging systems (ZMQ, ROS, DDS) and binary serialization formats (Cap'n Proto, Protobuf)
โ€ข C++ familiarity โ€” enough to read and integrate against the autonomy stack
โ€ข Cloud infrastructure experience for parallel test execution (AWS/GCP, Kubernetes)
โ€ข Experience with hardware-in-the-loop testing or real-time systems
โ€ข Performance engineering background โ€” you've debugged and optimized slow CI/test pipelines before
Company:
Atoms is a robotics startup that develops industrial robotics and physical AI systems to automate tasks across various industries. Founded in 2026, the company is headquartered in Los Angeles, USA, with a team of 1001-5000 employees. The company is currently Late Stage.
