Robotics Simulation information

What is robotics simulation?

Robotics simulation is the use of computer software to model and test the behavior of robots in a virtual environment. This allows engineers and researchers to design, program, and optimize robots without needing physical prototypes, saving time and resources. Simulations can replicate real-world conditions, enabling the analysis of robot movement, sensor data, and task performance before implementation. Robotics simulation is commonly used in developing autonomous systems, industrial automation, and research applications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a robotics simulation engineer?

To thrive as a Robotics Simulation Engineer, you need a strong background in robotics, computer science, and mathematics, often supported by a relevant degree such as electrical engineering or mechanical engineering. Familiarity with simulation tools like Gazebo, ROS (Robot Operating System), MATLAB/Simulink, and programming languages such as Python or C++ is essential. Problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are key soft skills that help in designing and refining complex simulation models. These abilities are crucial for creating accurate simulations that accelerate development, testing, and deployment of robotic systems.

What are some typical challenges faced when working in robotics simulation, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in robotics simulation often encounter challenges such as accurately modeling real-world physics, ensuring simulation fidelity, and integrating with hardware or software systems. Addressing these requires a strong understanding of both robotics and simulation tools, as well as effective collaboration with engineers, software developers, and testers. Staying updated with advancements in simulation platforms and maintaining clear documentation are key strategies to overcome these challenges and ensure the simulations provide meaningful insights for development and testing.

What is the difference between Robotics Simulation vs Robotics Software Engineer?

AspectRobotics SimulationRobotics Software Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Robotics, Computer Science, or related; experience with simulation toolsBachelor's or higher in Computer Science, Robotics, or related; programming skills
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, simulation platforms, development teamsSoftware development teams, robotics companies, tech firms
Industry UsageTesting algorithms, virtual prototyping, system validationDeveloping robot control software, algorithms, and integration
Common Search/ComparisonYesYes

Robotics Simulation focuses on creating virtual environments to test and validate robotic systems, while Robotics Software Engineers develop the actual software that controls robots. Both roles often collaborate but serve different stages of robotics development, with simulation emphasizing testing and validation, and software engineering focusing on implementation and coding.

Job description

SENIOR ROBOTICS SOFTWARE ENGINEER
Near Earth Autonomy seeks a Senior Robotics Software Engineer in Pittsburgh, PA to research, design, develop, refine, test, and deploy software systems for autonomous air vehicles to enable static obstacle detection and avoidance and safe landing on ground; research, design, develop, refine, test, and deploy software systems for autonomous air vehicles to enable mission planning, air traffic sensing and avoidance, flight without GPS, contingency management, and safe and precision landing on ground and on moving platforms; implement these capabilities on sensing and computing hardware and integrate them onto aerial platforms ranging from small quadcopters to helicopters; design and implement software stacks for autonomous vehicles; design and test autonomous aircraft systems using the Gazebo plugin within the Gazebo Sim simulation environment; research and implement techniques to increase algorithms' real-time efficiency; perform calibration of multi-sensor systems; and deploy and test robotics software on physical mobile robots in field conditions. Occasional local telecommuting is permitted.
Requirements: Master's degree or foreign equivalent in Robotics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related field. Five years of industry and/or research experience in robotics and/or autonomous flight domains. Experience must include: (i) design and implementation of sensing and perception algorithms and software stacks, including integrating sensor interfaces and processing data streams; (ii) point cloud and obstacle map generation from 3d sensor data and processing for obstacle detection on air or on ground; (iii) design and test of robotics systems and infrastructure using the Gazebo plugin within the Gazebo Sim simulation environment; (iv) deployment and test of robotics software on physical mobile robots in field conditions; (v) advanced object-oriented programming in C++ for real-time robotics systems, including implementation of efficient algorithms and sensor interfaces; (vi) design and implementation of robotics applications using ROS (Robot Operating System) and ROS2, including node communication, environment setup, and architectural infrastructure; (vii) software development in a Linux environment using the Git version control system to maintain packages and manage release history across distributed teams and tools using Docker for environment reproducibility; and (viii) technical support to robotics software co-developers. Must have knowledge of (i) RRT/RRT* path planning algorithms and integration of motion planners with robotics systems; (ii) extrinsic calibration of multi-sensor systems composed of lidars and cameras; and (iii) tools to unify data streams. Travel required within U.S. about 6 times per year, about 3 days per trip for flight tests and demonstrations.
