New Grad Robotics Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a New Grad Robotics Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a New Grad Robotics Engineer, you typically need a degree in robotics, mechanical engineering, computer science, or a related field, along with a solid understanding of control systems, kinematics, and programming languages such as Python or C++. Familiarity with robotics development platforms (like ROS), CAD software, and hands-on experience with sensors and actuators are highly valuable. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication skills help you adapt to complex projects and collaborate across disciplines. These competencies ensure you can design, build, and troubleshoot robotic systems efficiently in a fast-evolving technological environment.

What types of projects and responsibilities can a new grad robotics engineer expect in their first year?

As a new grad robotics engineer, you can expect to work on a variety of tasks such as assisting with the design, development, and testing of robotic systems or subsystems. Typical responsibilities may include writing and debugging code for robot control, collaborating with cross-functional teams like mechanical and electrical engineers, and participating in troubleshooting or integration activities. You may also be assigned to support ongoing research, help document technical processes, and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives. This hands-on experience helps build a strong foundation and often opens up future opportunities for specialization or advancement.

What does a New Grad Robotics Engineer do?

A New Grad Robotics Engineer typically supports the design, development, and testing of robotic systems and automation solutions. They work alongside experienced engineers to write code, integrate sensors and actuators, troubleshoot issues, and help improve the performance of robots. These engineers may also assist in prototyping, data analysis, and documentation. The role provides hands-on experience with robotics hardware and software, making it an important entry point for a career in automation and robotics.

What is the difference between New Grad Robotics Engineer vs Robotics Software Engineer?

AspectNew Grad Robotics EngineerRobotics Software Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's degree in robotics, mechanical, electrical engineering, or related fieldBachelor's or master's in computer science, robotics, or related field; programming skills essential
Work EnvironmentEntry-level, team-based projects in research labs or tech companiesDeveloping and maintaining robotics software in industry or research settings
Employer & Industry UsageStartups, research institutions, tech companies focusing on roboticsTech firms, industrial automation, autonomous vehicle companies

The main difference is that New Grad Robotics Engineers focus on gaining hands-on experience in robotics projects, often with a broader scope including hardware integration. Robotics Software Engineers primarily concentrate on developing and optimizing software solutions for robotics systems, requiring strong programming skills. Both roles are entry-level but differ in their focus areas within the robotics industry.

About Us

Are you ready to build the future of supply chain? At Gather AI, we're not just creating software; we're pioneering a new era of warehouse intelligence. We've developed a groundbreaking, vision-powered platform that uses autonomous drones and existing equipment to capture real-time data, completely digitizing workflows that have historically been manual and error-prone. This means facilities operate smarter, safer, and more efficiently, ultimately redefining "on-time, in full" delivery.

If you're looking for an opportunity to contribute to truly transformative technology and make a significant impact in a vital industry, Gather AI is the place for you. We're leading the charge in the rapidly evolving robotics industry, and we invite you to join us in reshaping the global supply chain, one intelligent warehouse at a time.

About the Team

Our Autonomy team works at the frontier of real-world robotics — building and deploying systems that navigate, perceive, and act in complex, uncontrolled warehouse environments. The team spans drone autonomy, perception, and MHE Vision, and operates across multiple active product lines with production deployments at customer sites. You'll be embedded in a matrixed project team ("pod") working closely with engineers across hardware and software, where individual contributions are immediately visible and where the hardest problems are also the most important ones.

About the Role

We are looking for a Robotics Engineer to join one of our core product teams — either our MHE Vision (MHEV) or Drone platform — and contribute to the systems that power Gather AI's warehouse intelligence products. Both platforms are in active implementation and moving toward ongoing production, with continuous improvements and new features on the horizon.

This is a hands-on role for someone who loves working across the full robotics stack. You'll write software, build tooling, analyze data, and get out to customer sites to debug and improve real systems in the field. Over time, you may extend into adjacent product lines including MHEV-Freezer, Drone-Freezer, or Wearables.

What You'll Do

  • Ramp up quickly on our drone or MHEV platform, developing a deep understanding of the full system — hardware and software
  • Write production software for tooling, observability, and data analysis to support system
  • performance and reliability
  • Analyze field data and write reports that inform engineering decisions and drive system improvements
  • Travel to customer sites to assist with system debug, deployment support, and hands-on problem solving
  • Collaborate closely with your pod team and cross-functional partners to ship features and resolve issues in production
  • Contribute to expanding Gather AI's product portfolio as the team grows into new platforms and environments

What You'll Need

  • Experience with ROS or ROS2 (ROS2 required)
  • Proficiency in C++ and/or Python for robotics software development
  • Experience working on integrated hardware/software robotics systems with a minimum comfort level across both domains
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills — the ability to perform root cause analysis and solve complex system-level problems
  • Ability to generate, process, and interpret data from robotic systems
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and drive problems to resolution
  • BS or MS in Robotics, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field; strong internship or lab/project experience is valued for early-career candidates
  • Linux proficiency

Nice to Have

  • Experience developing software using CI/CD practices with code review and pull requests
  • Familiarity with AI tools for system analysis and software generation
  • Experience in GPS-denied indoor environments such as aerial systems or warehouses
