Job description

Job Overview

Title: Principal Data Scientist, Agentic Lab Automation. Company: Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine. Location: Spring House, Pennsylvania, USA.

We are building a next-generation drug discovery engine that integrates robotic lab execution, real‑time data pipelines and intelligent AI workflows. This role focuses on designing and implementing the automated laboratory systems that generate high‑value data and enable closed‑loop AI‑driven scientific learning.

Key Responsibilities
  • Translate scientific priorities into automation and AI roadmaps; design, configure, integrate, and continuously improve robotic lab systems for high‑throughput data generation.
  • Build or oversee real‑time pipelines that connect automation software, data stores, models and compute environments; work with IT to implement resilient APIs, observability, versioning and workflow orchestration.
  • Design laboratory workflows and experiments optimized for AI‑driven learning; collaborate with AI/ML scientists to enable closed‑loop feedback and improve downstream models.
  • Ensure data generated by automated workflows is high‑quality, traceable, interoperable and AI‑ready; collaborate with data engineers and ontology experts to standardize assay outputs and support semantic enrichment.
  • Serve as a senior technical partner across Discovery, Data Science and IT; help shape standards, evaluate vendors and develop new ways of working.
Qualifications
  • Ph.D. (or equivalent) in Engineering, Robotics, Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Computational Biology or related field.
  • Significant industry experience building, integrating or scaling laboratory automation, AI‑enabled experimentation platforms or autonomous workflow systems in pharma, biotech or advanced R&D.
  • Expertise in robotic lab systems, scientific workflow orchestration, laboratory informatics or related areas.
  • Experience designing or supporting real‑time data pipelines and integrating heterogeneous scientific data and instrument outputs.
  • Strong communication, problem‑solving and stakeholder management skills; ability to translate scientific objectives into scalable technical solutions.
  • Preferred: experience applying agentic AI, AI/ML optimization or intelligent decision systems to laboratory workflows; familiarity with MLOps/DevOps, workflow engines and monitoring.
  • Understanding of FAIR data, ontologies, semantic models, lineage/provenance or AI‑ready scientific data standards.
  • Experience in drug discovery domains such as small molecules, biologics, peptide discovery, high‑throughput experimentation, imaging or human‑relevant model systems.

Compensation & Benefits

Base salary range: $117,000.00 – $201,250.00. Eligibility for company 401(k), long‑term incentive program and various time‑off benefits including vacation, sick time, holiday pay, parental leave, bereavement and caregiver leave.
