What You'll Do

As Survey Crew Chief, you'll lead daily field operations while working under the direction of a Licensed Professional Surveyor (PLS). You'll oversee survey crews, ensure quality and accuracy, and safely execute projects from start to finish.

You'll perform and oversee:

  • Boundary Surveys

  • ALTA/NSPS Land Title Surveys

  • Topographic Surveys

  • Route Surveys

  • Utility Location Surveys

  • Construction Layout & Staking

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Lead and supervise field survey crews

  • Coordinate daily field activities and project schedules

  • Operate Trimble GPS, robotic total stations, digital levels, and data collectors

  • Collect accurate survey data and maintain detailed field documentation

  • Interpret plats, legal descriptions, engineering drawings, and construction plans

  • Verify data accuracy before office submission

  • Train and mentor survey technicians

  • Communicate with project managers, contractors, property owners, and clients

  • Maintain survey vehicles and equipment

  • Promote a strong safety culture and OSHA compliance

Qualifications

Required

  • Minimum 5 years of experience as a Survey Crew Chief

  • Strong knowledge of land surveying principles and field procedures

  • Experience with:

    • Boundary Surveys

    • ALTA/NSPS Surveys

    • Topographic Surveys

    • Construction Staking

  • Proficiency using:

    • Trimble GPS

    • Robotic Total Stations

    • Data Collectors

  • Ability to interpret legal descriptions, plats, and engineering drawings

  • Strong communication and leadership skills

  • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record

  • Must be at least 21 years old

Preferred

  • Associate Degree in Land Surveying or Civil Engineering Technology

  • Illinois Surveyor Intern (S.I.T.)

  • Experience with IDOT standards

  • Civil 3D

  • Trimble Business Center

  • Utility surveying experience

Good Faith Salary Range: The annual starting salary for this position is between $70,000 to $85,000 annually. Factors which may affect starting pay within this range may include geography/market, skills, education, experience and other qualifications of the successful candidate.
