What does a Robotics Engineer do?

A Robotics Engineer designs, builds, and tests robots and robotic systems that are able to perform tasks typically done by humans. They work on integrating hardware and software to create machines that can automate processes in industries such as manufacturing, healthcare, and logistics. Their responsibilities often include researching new technologies, programming robotic systems, troubleshooting issues, and collaborating with other engineers. Robotics Engineers play a key role in advancing automation and improving efficiency and safety in various sectors.

What Does a Robotics Engineer Do?

A robotics engineer designs and often builds robots from their plans and ensures the correct processes are in place for the robot to run properly. They work with their clients to determine costs and design specifications, then they design software systems to control robotic systems; build, configure, and test robots; and automate processes to increase production and precision. Once the robotic system is in place, the robotics engineer helps troubleshoot any problems the clients have with the system.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Robotics Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Robotics Engineer, you need a strong background in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and computer science, typically backed by a relevant bachelor's or master's degree. Familiarity with programming languages like Python or C++, CAD software, and robotics platforms such as ROS (Robot Operating System) is essential. Problem-solving skills, creativity, and effective teamwork are standout soft skills in this field. These competencies are crucial for designing, building, and refining innovative robotic systems that meet complex technical and user requirements.

What types of projects do Robotics Engineers typically collaborate on with cross-functional teams?

Robotics Engineers often work closely with professionals from software development, mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering to design, build, and test robotic systems. Projects can range from automating manufacturing processes to developing autonomous vehicles or medical robots. Collaboration is essential, as engineers must integrate hardware and software components while ensuring systems meet safety and performance standards. Effective communication and teamwork are key to successfully bringing innovative robotics solutions from concept to reality.

What is the difference between Robotics Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectRobotics EngineerMechanical Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Robotics, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering or related field; certifications in robotics or automationBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering; Professional Engineer (PE) license optional
Work EnvironmentDesigning, testing, and programming robotic systems in labs or manufacturing settingsDesigning and analyzing mechanical systems in various industries, including manufacturing, automotive, aerospace
Industry UsageRobotics companies, automation firms, manufacturingManufacturing, automotive, aerospace, product design

Robotics Engineers focus on designing and developing robotic systems, combining knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and software engineering. Mechanical Engineers have a broader scope, working on mechanical systems across multiple industries. While both roles require engineering degrees, Robotics Engineers often need specialized skills in programming and automation. The choice depends on your interest in robotics and automation versus general mechanical system design.

Job Title: Technician 2

Job Description

The Technician 2 works with a team of engineers to maintain, repair, and optimize advanced automated and robotic systems in a high-tech warehousing and distribution environment. In this role, you become a subject matter expert on automation technologies, including Automated Adapters, Vertical Lifts, Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems, and a fleet of robotic vehicles. You support daily operations of robotic material handling systems, partnering closely with onsite operations teams to ensure best-in-class quality, safety, and system performance.

Responsibilities

  • Perform detailed inspections on systems associated with Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems, automated robotic vehicles, Automated Adapters, and lifts to ensure safe and reliable operation.
  • Support and lead continuous system operation by adjusting, calibrating, repairing, replacing, or modifying mechanical and electrical components as needed.
  • Process and monitor the flow of the automated storage and retrieval system, including manual inbound, automatic inbound, and automatic outbound operations, to achieve maximum throughput and cases per hour.
  • Troubleshoot automated robotic vehicle anomalies and stoppages using schematic and wiring diagrams, electro-mechanical diagrams, and advanced test equipment.
  • Ensure high-quality maintenance practices and complete, accurate documentation of all work performed in the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Communicate production-impacting problems clearly and promptly, including recommended corrective actions and estimated time required for both corrective and emergency maintenance.
  • Perform cleanup of equipment and remove replaced parts and debris from work areas after repairs and maintenance activities are completed.
  • Recover automated robotic vehicles within the automation matrix select system, including working in restrictive environments and tight spaces when necessary.
  • Perform minor utility and fabrication work such as machining holes and brackets, cutting steel, aligning sensors, and attaching components and hardware.
  • Follow all safety requirements and protocols, including lockout/tagout procedures and fall protection protocols, while working on and around automated equipment.
  • Carry out other related duties as assigned to support reliable operation of the automated and robotic systems.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience working with mechanical automation systems.
  • Strong hands-on troubleshooting skills for machines and automated systems, including the ability to diagnose and resolve issues when equipment fails to operate as expected.
  • Proficiency in performing all inspection functions on automated systems and related equipment.
  • Strong electro-mechanical skills, including working with mechanical, electrical, and control components.
  • Solid experience with Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), including PLC programming knowledge and troubleshooting capabilities.
  • Ability to read and interpret schematic and wiring diagrams and electro-mechanical diagrams.
  • Experience working with conveyor systems, warehouse automation systems, automated distribution, and automated warehouse environments.
  • Capability to use advanced test equipment to diagnose and correct system faults.
  • Commitment to following safety protocols, including lockout/tagout and fall protection procedures.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with automated warehousing and distribution technologies such as Autostore, Symbotic, or similar systems.
  • Experience in robotic material handling systems and automated storage and retrieval systems.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with onsite operations teams to drive operational excellence, quality, safety, and performance.
  • Strong communication skills to clearly explain technical issues, maintenance needs, and system status to team members and stakeholders.
  • Interest in long-term career growth within a rapidly expanding automation-focused organization.
  • Adaptability and willingness to learn new high-tech and cutting-edge automation technologies.

Work Environment

This role is based within a large automated warehousing and distribution structure that houses advanced robotic and automation systems. You will routinely climb steep stairs and walk up and down multiple levels to navigate the automation structure, frequently working near railings that are high off the ground. The environment is protected from direct weather but not from temperature changes, and you must be comfortable working in conditions ranging from approximately 32°F to 105°F. The position requires frequent lifting of items up to 50 pounds and moving items up to 80 pounds, as well as standing and walking for up to 10–12 hours per shift. You will regularly work at heights up to 45 feet and within restrictive areas as narrow as 24 inches, where you may need to stand, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl to access equipment. The role involves ongoing physical activity, including bending, twisting, stooping, pushing, pulling, gripping, climbing, crawling, sitting, handling objects, and performing repetitive movements with both hands and feet. Strict adherence to all safety requirements and protocols is essential, including lockout/tagout procedures and fall protection measures when working on or around automated and robotic systems. The environment is highly technical, fast-paced, and focused on reliability, safety, and continuous improvement, offering the opportunity to become an expert in cutting-edge automation technologies.
