Robotics Deployment Engineer information

What are Robotics Deployment Engineers?

Robotics Deployment Engineers are professionals who specialize in installing, integrating, and configuring robotic systems in real-world settings. They work closely with clients to ensure robots are properly set up, tested, and optimized for specific operational needs. Their responsibilities often include troubleshooting hardware and software issues, providing on-site support, and training staff on using robotic equipment. These engineers play a critical role in making sure robotics technology transitions smoothly from the lab or factory to its intended application environment.

What are some typical challenges faced by Robotics Deployment Engineers during on-site installations?

Robotics Deployment Engineers often encounter challenges such as adapting to varying facility layouts, integrating new robotic systems with existing infrastructure, and troubleshooting unexpected hardware or software issues during deployment. Communication and collaboration with local IT, operations, and maintenance teams are key to overcoming these obstacles, as each site may present unique requirements or constraints. Being flexible and solution-oriented is essential, as timelines can be tight and successful deployment often hinges on quickly resolving integration and performance concerns.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Robotics Deployment Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Robotics Deployment Engineer, you need a strong background in robotics, mechanical or electrical engineering, and experience with system integration, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with programming languages (such as Python or C++), robotics middleware (like ROS), and hands-on experience with automation hardware and control systems are typically essential. Problem-solving, adaptability, and excellent communication skills help you coordinate with cross-functional teams and address client needs effectively. These skills ensure successful on-site deployment, troubleshooting, and optimization of robotic systems in diverse environments.

Job description

As the Robot Chief Engineer for the Pallets & Bundles Division and Telehandler platform, you will be responsible for the technical leadership, execution, and performance of autonomous robotic systems focused on material handling, pallet movement, bundle handling, and telehandler automation solutions.

This role serves as the primary technical owner of the robot platform, leading multidisciplinary engineering teams responsible for the design, integration, deployment, reliability, and continuous improvement of autonomous telehandler and palletized material handling systems. You will work cross-functionally with Product Management, Operations, Deployment, Manufacturing, and Customer teams to ensure successful delivery of scalable robotic solutions that perform reliably in demanding industrial environments.

The Robot Chief Engineer is expected to drive engineering excellence, platform maturity, systems integration quality, and operational execution while ensuring alignment to ASI's Product Development Process (PDP), customer requirements, commercialization goals, and long-term platform strategy.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Lead the technical direction, execution, and platform maturity of ASI's autonomous Pallets & Bundles and Telehandler robotic systems.

  • Own overall robot-level engineering integration across software, controls, perception, autonomy, electrical, hydraulic, mechanical, and systems engineering disciplines.

  • Lead multidisciplinary engineering teams while advancing a culture of innovation, accountability, collaboration, and delivery.

  • Ensure all development activities align with ASI Product Development Process (PDP) standards and required gate reviews.

  • Drive platform scalability, reliability, maintainability, and deployment readiness across customer environments.

  • Oversee system architecture, requirements management, verification and validation efforts, and robot performance metrics.

  • Partner closely with Product Management and Operations teams to align engineering priorities with customer outcomes and commercialization objectives.

  • Support field deployments, issue resolution, root cause investigations, and continuous improvement efforts for deployed robotic systems.

  • Facilitate technical decision-making and tradeoff analysis across performance, cost, reliability, manufacturability, and deployment considerations.

  • Manage engineering schedules, resource allocation, technical risks, and milestone execution to support successful program delivery.

  • Conduct technical design reviews and ensure engineering quality standards are maintained throughout development lifecycles.

  • Collaborate with Manufacturing and Supply Chain teams to support production readiness and hardware standardization efforts.

  • Provide technical mentorship and leadership development to engineering team members across disciplines.

  • Stay current on industry trends, emerging technologies, autonomous vehicle systems, robotics architectures, and material handling automation advancements.

  • Ensure compliance with applicable safety standards, engineering best practices, and regulatory requirements.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Robotics, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related technical field required. Master's degree preferred.

  • 8+ years of progressive engineering experience in robotics, autonomous systems, heavy equipment, automation, industrial systems, or related technical environments.

  • 5+ years leading multidisciplinary engineering teams and complex product development programs.

  • Demonstrated experience serving in a senior technical leadership role such as Chief Engineer, Engineering Manager, Technical Lead, Systems Engineering Lead, or equivalent.

  • Strong technical understanding of robotic systems integration, controls systems, autonomy, perception systems, embedded systems, hydraulics, or electromechanical platforms.

  • Experience supporting complex mobile equipment, industrial machinery, autonomous vehicles, telehandlers, material handling equipment, or similar robotic platforms preferred.

  • Strong understanding of systems engineering principles, requirements management, product development lifecycles, and verification/validation methodologies.

  • Ability to drive execution across cross-functional teams in fast-paced and technically complex environments.

  • Strong problem-solving, organizational, communication, and leadership skills.

  • Experience balancing technical priorities, deployment realities, customer needs, and commercialization objectives.

  • Commitment to engineering excellence, innovation, safety, and continuous improvement.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience as a Chief Engineer or similar.

  • Experience working in Robotics, Automation, or a similar field.

  • Master's Degree.
