Robotics Deployment Engineer information

What is a robotics deployment engineer?

Robotics Deployment Engineers are professionals who specialize in installing, integrating, and configuring robotic systems in real-world settings. They work closely with clients to ensure robots are properly set up, tested, and optimized for specific operational needs. Their responsibilities often include troubleshooting hardware and software issues, providing on-site support, and training staff on using robotic equipment. These engineers play a critical role in making sure robotics technology transitions smoothly from the lab or factory to its intended application environment.

What are some typical challenges faced by robotics deployment engineers during on-site installations?

Robotics Deployment Engineers often encounter challenges such as adapting to varying facility layouts, integrating new robotic systems with existing infrastructure, and troubleshooting unexpected hardware or software issues during deployment. Communication and collaboration with local IT, operations, and maintenance teams are key to overcoming these obstacles, as each site may present unique requirements or constraints. Being flexible and solution-oriented is essential, as timelines can be tight and successful deployment often hinges on quickly resolving integration and performance concerns.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a robotics deployment engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Robotics Deployment Engineer, you need a strong background in robotics, mechanical or electrical engineering, and experience with system integration, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with programming languages (such as Python or C++), robotics middleware (like ROS), and hands-on experience with automation hardware and control systems are typically essential. Problem-solving, adaptability, and excellent communication skills help you coordinate with cross-functional teams and address client needs effectively. These skills ensure successful on-site deployment, troubleshooting, and optimization of robotic systems in diverse environments.

Job description

Description
Stratom, Inc. is a mission-driven engineering company building autonomous and unmanned off-highway vehicles and related robotic systems. Our systems operate in demanding real-world environments, where performance, reliability, and engineering discipline are essential. Our work integrates advanced autonomy with rugged industrial hardware designed for austere conditions.
Our work spans the full lifecycle of complex systems, from early concept and prototyping through fielded deployment. With multiple working prototypes in hand, our next major opportunity is transitioning these platforms into production over the coming years to deliver capable systems at scale. We are looking for talented and engineers who want to take ownership of challenging engineering problems and play a key role in bringing multiple platforms into production.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Own the integration and execution of mechatronic robotic systems, including computers, sensors, wiring harnesses, control systems, and wireless networks
  • Translate system requirements, MBSE diagrams, and interfaces into practical, buildable hardware solutions in collaboration with the engineering team
  • Make and document system-level design tradeoffs related to power, compute, sensing, packaging, and safety
  • Design and implement electrical architectures, wiring schematics, cable layouts, and power distribution solutions
  • Select, integrate, and bring up control systems and autonomous sensing platforms
  • Integrate industrial automation technologies such as hydraulic systems, robotic arms, motion control, cooling,  and safety systems
  • Design and support electronics packaging and enclosures for rugged, off-highway, and field environments
  • Build and modify hardware through hands-on prototyping and fabrication using shop tools (mills, drills, welders, etc.)
  • Drive system-level debugging and troubleshooting across electrical, mechanical, and software domains
  • Identify, manage, and mitigate integration risks throughout development
  • Execute and support integration testing, verification, validation, and field testing efforts

Qualifications
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, or a related field
  • Demonstrated experience designing, building, and integrating complex electromechanical or robotic systems
  • Strong hands-on background in wiring harness design, electrical integration, and system assembly
  •  Experience selecting and integrating sensors, actuators, and compute platforms
  • Comfort working hands-on with mechanical systems, vehicles, or industrial equipment
  • Ability to troubleshoot system-level issues spanning hardware, controls, and integration
  • Self-directed engineer with strong ownership, accountability, and follow-through
Preferred Skills
  • Experience with autonomous or unmanned vehicle systems operating in real-world environments
  • Familiarity with industrial automation systems, including hydraulics, servos, motion control, and safety systems
  • Familiarity with autonomous sensing technologies, including cameras, LiDAR, and point cloud–based systems
  • Experience designing ruggedized electronics and wiring for harsh environments
  • Understanding of military specifications related to safety, electronics, power, mechanical, and environmental requirements
  •  Experience supporting systems through prototype iteration, field testing, and transition toward production
  • Familiarity with relevant military and industry standards, such as MIL-STD-882, MIL-STD-810, MIL-STD-461/464, ISO 26262, etc.
  •  Ability to provide technical leadership, set priorities, and guide others during integration activities
A Note About This Role
These qualifications represent the types of experience that tend to be successful at Stratom. We are intentionally building a small team of engineers who take responsibility for delivering real systems. We value engineers who bring complementary strengths. Roles at Stratom often intersect, and the exact responsibilities may evolve based on the skills and initiative of the person who joins. Ultimately, we are building a team that contributes to our mission.
We recognize that great engineers come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. If you are excited about the role but don’t meet every qualification listed, we still encourage you to apply.
Additional Requirements
This position requires use of information which is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and/or the Export Administration Regulations (EAR).
