Job description

Job Summary 

 Under the direction of the Director of Automation, Robotic Controls Engineer III serves as a senior technical resource for the design, programming, integration, commissioning, and troubleshooting of robotic and automated manufacturing systems. This position leads complex automation projects, develops robotics and controls standards, mentors engineering and technical personnel, and supports strategic automation initiatives across manufacturing operations. The role applies advanced knowledge of industrial robotics, PLCs, machine vision, safety systems, and controls architecture to improve safety, quality, productivity, equipment reliability, and reduce the Cost of Poor Quality (COPQ).

This will be achieved while maintaining HellermannTyton's Quality and EHS certifications by supporting all corporate policies, procedures, work instructions, and required documentation.

 Essential Functions

  • Lead complex robotic, PLC, HMI, and machine vision integration projects.
  • Lead equipment testing, commissioning, startup, validation, and production readiness activities.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve advanced robotics, controls, electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and manufacturing automation issues.
  • Develop, maintain, and improve technical standards, documentation, and work instructions.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives focused on safety, quality, productivity, equipment reliability, and COPQ reduction.
  • Develop and implement automation solutions that improve process capability, reduce scrap and rework, and minimize the Cost of Poor Quality (COPQ).
  • Provide technical leadership to engineering, maintenance, quality, production, suppliers, and project teams.

Other Functions

  • Establish robotics and controls engineering standards for all North American facilities.
  • Serve as the primary technical escalation point for complex Robotic issues.
  • Assist Director of Automation in evaluating and selecting new robotics and automation technologies
  • Mentor Robotics & Controls Engineers I and II.
  • Lead machine vision, safety, controls, and industrial networking integration activities.
  • Lead root cause analysis and corrective actions for complex automation-related issues.
  • Lead or support Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT).
  • Lead automation equipment installation, modification, and production startup activities.
  • Train and mentor assigned personnel on robotic and automated equipment.
  • Identify and lead opportunities to reduce scrap, rework, downtime, and Cost of Poor Quality (COPQ).
  • Develop engineering standards, work instructions, and technical documentation.
  • Travel as required to support automation projects and manufacturing operations.

Success on this role will require

  • Advanced understanding of industrial robotics, robotic programming, and automation systems.
  • Advanced knowledge of PLCs, HMIs, controls architecture, and industrial control systems.
  • Ability to lead troubleshooting of complex electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and automation-related issues.
  • Advanced understanding of machine vision systems, sensors, industrial networking, and controls integration.
  • Ability to create, review, and approve electrical schematics, technical drawings, and engineering documentation.
  • Advanced knowledge of machine safety principles, safe work practices, and equipment validation requirements.
  • Experience leading equipment commissioning, startup, validation, and production support.
  • Advanced knowledge of root cause analysis and corrective action methodologies.
  • Ability to lead continuous improvement efforts focused on scrap, rework, downtime, and COPQ reduction.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office, SolidWorks/CAD, and common engineering software applications.

What You'll Bring

  • Bachelor's degree in Robotics Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Automation Engineering, or related technical field. In lieu of a degree, candidates with 7+ years of relevant experience in robotics, automation, controls engineering, or a related field will be considered.
  • Degreed Candidates should have 5+ years of experience in robotics, controls, manufacturing, or automation environments.
  • Advanced knowledge of industrial robotics, PLCs, HMIs, machine vision, and automated manufacturing systems.
  • Ability to read, interpret, update, and approve electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, and technical documentation.
  • Advanced analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills with the ability to lead cross functional technical teams.
  • Advanced proficiency with SolidWorks/CAD and applicable engineering software.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, lead technical deliverables, and support project execution in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • Willingness to travel as required to support automation projects, equipment installations, and startup activities.
  • Commitment to supporting safety, quality, continuous improvement, and Cost of Poor Quality (COPQ) reduction initiatives.
