Job description

Symetra has an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Manager, Medical Risk Consultants!

About the role

In this role, you will lead a team of registered nurses (Medical Risk Consultants, "MRCs"), overseeing daily operations, team development, and service delivery. You will drive quality, consistency, and efficiency across workflows while coaching and developing your team to deliver strong business and customer outcomes.

You'll also partner across the organization to support underwriting, claims, and cost-containment strategies-playing a key role in both operational excellence and strategic decision-making.

What you will do

  • Team Leadership & Development
    • Lead, coach, and develop MRCs through regular feedback and performance management
    • Build team capability through training, mentoring, and ongoing development plans
    • Foster an inclusive, engaged team environment focused on accountability and customer service
    • Manage staffing, workload distribution, and scheduling to meet business needs
  • Operations & Performance
    • Oversee workflows to ensure timely, accurate handling of claim reviews, cost-containment opportunities, and underwriting support
    • Monitor quality, productivity, and service metrics; find opportunities for improvement
    • Ensure compliance with internal policies and applicable regulations (e.g., ACA, ERISA)
    • Maintain and share operational reporting to advise decision-making.
  • Strategy & Continuous Improvement
    • Identify trends, risks, and opportunities to improve processes, quality, and efficiency
    • Lead or support initiatives related to process improvements and system changes
    • Manage vendor relationships related to cost-containment and claims support
    • Maintain business continuity plans
  • Cross-Functional Partnership
    • Collaborate with underwriting, stop loss, and other internal partners to support business goals
    • Provide expertise on complex claims, underwriting reviews, and audits
    • Support the Stop Loss team during peak and non-peak cycles
  • Financial Oversight
    • Support budget planning and forecasting
    • Monitor expenses and find opportunities for cost management

Compensation

Salary Range: $96,700 - $161,200 plus eligibility for annual bonus program

Who You Are

  • Associate or bachelor's degree in nursing, business administration, health management, or other relevant insurance/business field required.
  • Active RN License required.
  • 8+ years of stop loss, medical risk management experience required.
  • Prior people leadership experience with a focus on coaching and development
  • Strong understanding of self-funded insurance, medical terminology, and claims management
  • Experience working with cost-containment strategies and vendor management.
  • Industry involvement (e.g., SIIA, SPBA) or professional designations a plus.
  • Experience supporting underwriting or complex claims review a plus.
  • Strong leadership, coaching, and team development skills
  • Analytical and problem-solving approach
  • Ability to balance priorities and achieve results in a time-sensitive environment
  • Clear and effective communication skills
  • Comfort working cross-functionally and influencing business partners
  • Technology savvy with MS Office Suite proficiency.
  • Connexure/ESL experience preferred.
  • Ability to travel as needed to support the business.

Travel:

Required Training & Professional Development
All newly hired people leaders with direct reports are required to complete a comprehensive leadership development program within their first year. This program includes both virtual and in-person training. The in-person sessions will take place at Symetra's corporate headquarters in Bellevue, Washington. Symetra covers all travel and accommodation expenses.
