What is an RN residency?

An RN residency is a structured program designed to support new graduate registered nurses (RNs) as they transition from nursing school to clinical practice. These programs typically last several months to a year and combine classroom learning, hands-on training, mentorship, and peer support. The goal is to help new nurses develop confidence, clinical skills, and professional judgment in a supportive environment, ultimately improving patient care and nurse retention. RN residencies are commonly offered by hospitals and healthcare systems and may include rotations in various specialties.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an RN resident?

To thrive as an RN Resident, you need a foundational nursing education (BSN or ADN) and an active RN license, with strong clinical assessment and patient care skills. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs), clinical documentation systems, and basic medical equipment is typically required. Effective communication, eagerness to learn, adaptability, and teamwork are crucial soft skills for success in this transitional role. These skills and qualities ensure safe, high-quality patient care while supporting your growth from student to independent practitioner in a supportive learning environment.

What kinds of support and mentorship can new nurses expect during an RN residency program?

RN Residency programs are designed to help newly licensed nurses transition smoothly into clinical practice. Participants typically receive structured support through preceptorship, where experienced nurses provide one-on-one mentorship, guidance, and feedback. Residents also attend regular educational sessions, skills labs, and debriefings that address both clinical skills and professional development. This supportive environment encourages learning, builds confidence, and fosters collaboration among peers and multidisciplinary teams, helping new nurses grow into competent, independent practitioners.
