What is an RN Program Director?

An RN Program Director is a registered nurse who oversees the administration, development, and evaluation of nursing education programs, typically within colleges, universities, or healthcare organizations. Their responsibilities include managing faculty and staff, ensuring curriculum meets accreditation standards, and supporting student success. They also play a key role in maintaining compliance with state and federal regulations and fostering relationships with clinical partners for student placements. This leadership position requires both clinical experience and a strong background in academic or program management.

What are some common challenges faced by an RN Program Director, and how can they be managed effectively?

RN Program Directors often encounter challenges such as balancing administrative responsibilities with supporting faculty and students, staying current with accreditation standards, and adapting curriculum to evolving healthcare trends. Effective management involves strong organizational skills, clear communication, and ongoing professional development. Building collaborative relationships with faculty, clinical partners, and regulatory bodies also helps ensure program success and compliance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an RN Program Director, and why are they important?

To thrive as an RN Program Director, you need advanced clinical expertise, leadership abilities, and a graduate degree in nursing or a related field, often accompanied by RN licensure and experience in nursing education or administration. Familiarity with accreditation standards, curriculum development software, and learning management systems is typically required, along with certifications such as Nurse Executive (NE-BC/NEA-BC) being advantageous. Exceptional communication, organizational, and conflict-resolution skills are vital for managing faculty, students, and complex program logistics. These competencies ensure the effective development, delivery, and continuous improvement of nursing education programs, directly impacting student success and program accreditation.

Job description

About Stepful:

Stepful is a workforce platform redefining how America's largest health systems build, train, and retain their talent. Since our founding in 2021, Stepful’s trained over 32,000 practice-ready healthcare workers.

Layering onto our successful direct-to-consumer training, Stepful partners with leading healthcare institutions to address the growing national shortage of healthcare workers. We’re improving access to quality healthcare for everyone, everywhere, and improving access to healthcare career ladders for those who need them most.

Our students form the talent pipelines for major employers such as NY-Presbyterian, Mt. Sinai, HCA, Providence, CVS, and Walgreens. We have partnerships with half of the top 10 health systems in the US and are in process with many more.

Stepful is backed by Y Combinator, Reach Capital, and AlleyCorp, with a recent $55M Series C led by Oak HC/FT. We were named the #1 EdTech company in the U.S. by TIME for 2025.

Our values:

We credit much of our success to our exceptional team. We’re looking for mission-driven builders who thrive in fast-paced, ambiguous environments, and embody our four core values:

  • Care first: We do whatever it takes for our students to succeed.

  • Learn quickly: We test, learn with data, and iterate.

  • Build together: We win when we rely on each other.

  • Own it: We show up, take initiative, and show pride.

The opportunity:

Stepful is building something different in nursing education — and we're growing fast.

We launched our first practical nursing programs in Ohio and Missouri, and we're just getting started. As we expand our footprint across more states, we're looking to connect with experienced nursing education leaders who are excited by the opportunity to build, grow, and lead programs that are genuinely changing who gets access to a nursing career.

If you're a Registered Nurse with a background in nursing education leadership — whether you're currently a Program Director, Dean, faculty leader, or a senior instructor ready to step up — we'd love to hear from you. We're not just filling seats; we're building a bench of exceptional leaders who share our belief that rigorous, accessible nursing education can coexist.

At Stepful, our nursing programs combine live virtual instruction with in-person skills labs and clinical rotations at established employer partner sites — built on the NCSBN Clinical Judgment Measurement Model and designed to produce practice-ready nurses. We were named the #1 EdTech company in the U.S. by TIME in 2025.

What you'll do:

  • Teach and facilitate learning — carry a teaching load that may include didactic instruction, skills lab facilitation (in-person), and clinical education (in-person), with flexibility across modalities as program needs evolve.

  • Oversee nursing curriculum — collaborate with internal teams to review, refine, and continuously improve content across PN and RN program curriculum.

  • Manage program enrollment — support program enrollment, including recruitment, admissions, orientation, and registration processes.

  • Support student success — oversee student progress and performance, including grading, academic advising, and program completion.

  • Build and lead the team — support the hiring process, train, and supervise a team of adjunct instructors, fostering a collaborative and supportive environment.

  • Partner with enterprise clients — serve as a key point of contact for Stepful’s enterprise healthcare partners in Ohio, supporting program alignment and ongoing relationship management.

  • Manage resources responsibly — develop and oversee program budgets and operational resources.

  • Ensure regulatory compliance — serve as a primary point of contact with the Ohio Board of Nursing, managing ongoing compliance and regulatory requirements for Stepful's nursing programs in the state of Ohio.

  • Drive program quality — conduct ongoing program evaluation and assessment, using data to make recommendations for improvement and ensure compliance with accreditation and regulatory requirements.

  • Maintain scheduling flexibility — some evening and weekend obligations are required.

What you'll bring:

  • Current, unencumbered licensure as a Registered Nurse

  • A master's degree in nursing

  • 5+ years of RN nursing practice experience

  • 2+ years experience as a faculty member with a registered nursing education program

  • Demonstrated ability to teach across modalities — didactic, skills lab, and clinical settings

  • Experience with Laerdal manikins or similar simulation technology

  • Familiarity with accreditation and regulatory compliance for nursing programs, including Board of Nursing requirements

  • Experience engaging with external partners, clinical sites, or employer stakeholders — a collaborative, relationship-oriented approach is a plus

  • Strong ability to work cross-functionally with faculty, staff, and students, and institutional partners

Interview Process:

  • Introductory call with Talent Acquisition

  • Interview with Hiring Manager

  • Take-Home Assignment

  • Final Panel Interviews

Benefits and Compensation:

  • Meaningful Equity Stake

  • Subsidized Medical, Dental, and Vision insurance plan options

  • 401(k)

  • FSA, HSA and commuter benefits

  • Learning stipend

  • Open vacation policy, including:

    • Guidance of 15 days PTO annually

    • Stepful closed the last week of December

    • 15 work-from-anywhere days

    • 10 public holidays observed for 2026

We do not discriminate in hiring or any employment decision based on race, color, religion, national origin, age, sex, marital status, ancestry, disability, genetic information, veteran status, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, pregnancy, or other applicable legally protected characteristic.
