What is an RN Cath Lab PRN?

An RN Cath Lab PRN is a Registered Nurse who works on an as-needed basis (PRN, or 'pro re nata') in a cardiac catheterization laboratory. These nurses assist physicians during procedures such as angioplasties, stent placements, and other cardiac interventions. Their duties often include patient preparation, monitoring vital signs, administering medications, and providing post-procedure care. Working PRN means they are scheduled according to the needs of the facility, rather than having a set shift or full-time schedule.

What are the most common challenges an RN faces when working PRN in the Cath Lab, and how can they be managed?

Working as a PRN RN in the Cath Lab often means adapting quickly to different shifts, team dynamics, and varying patient acuity levels. One common challenge is staying up-to-date with evolving procedures and protocols without the consistency of a full-time schedule. To manage these challenges, it’s helpful to proactively communicate with the core team, seek regular training or shadowing opportunities, and maintain strong organizational skills. Building rapport with staff and staying organized can help ensure quality patient care, even when working sporadically.
