What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Rive Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Rive Designer, you need a solid understanding of animation principles, motion design, and proficiency in design tools, often supported by a background in graphic design or animation. Familiarity with Rive’s animation editor, vector graphics tools, and knowledge of integrating animations with code (such as Flutter or React) are typically required. Creativity, strong attention to detail, and effective communication help designers create engaging, interactive experiences and collaborate well with developers and product teams. These skills ensure the creation of high-quality, performant animations that enhance user interfaces and overall user experience.

What are some common challenges faced by Rive Designers when collaborating with developers and product teams?

Rive Designers often encounter challenges when ensuring their interactive animations integrate seamlessly with product development workflows. One common hurdle is aligning animation specifications with technical constraints, such as file size, platform compatibility, and performance requirements. Effective communication and early collaboration with developers are crucial for troubleshooting potential issues and iterating on animations that meet both design vision and technical feasibility. Additionally, clearly documenting animation behaviors and expected user interactions can help streamline the handoff process, reducing the need for multiple revisions.

What is a Rive Designer?

A Rive Designer is a professional who specializes in creating interactive animations and motion graphics using Rive, a real-time animation tool. They design and animate vector graphics that can be used in apps, games, websites, and other digital products. Their work often involves collaborating with developers and UI/UX teams to bring user interfaces and digital experiences to life through engaging animations. Rive Designers need a strong understanding of animation principles, vector design, and how to optimize assets for interactive environments.

Job description

JOB DESCRIPTION/GENERAL DUTIES

Live at the intersection of motion design and front-end engineering.

RUN Studios, and its client partner, a large online retailer headquartered in Seattle, are seeking a Technical Motion Designer (Rive / Front-End Focus) to join for an approximate 3-month project.

While this position has potential to be remote, RUN Studios can only consider candidates currently residing in the following states at this time: CA, CO, FL, ID, MI, NJ, NY, OR, TX, WA.

This isn’t a traditional motion role. It’s closer to a front-end engineer who deeply understands motion—someone who can build, structure, and ship interactive animations using Rive in real products. You’ll work on expressive, real-time motion systems—not just exporting animations, but designing how motion behaves, responds, and scales in code. The ideal candidate should have experience with state machines, advanced data binds, and React Native integration. They need to function as an independent owner who can work with engineering teams without extensive oversight.

As a Technical Motion Designer, You Will

  • Build and implement interactive animations using Rive across product surfaces
  • Translate motion concepts into production-ready assets
  • Own animation logic, state machines, and databinds inside Rive
  • Optimize for performance, scalability, and reusability
  • Help define best practices for how motion is built and implemented with Rive
  • Build tools that can be used by designers to modify Rive files at runtime

In This Role, You Bring

  • 7-10+ years of experience in motion/UX design with a minimum of 1+ years of experience in RIVE technology
  • Strong front-end engineering skills (JavaScript/TypeScript preferred)
  • Experience with Rive, including: State machines, Advanced databinds and logic, Complex, interactive animation systems
  • Solid understanding of animation principles (timing, easing, choreography)
  • Experience integrating animation into real products—not just prototypes
  • Comfortable working between design and engineering teams
  • Ability to debug, iterate, and refine motion directly in code

Bonus If You Have

  • Experience with React, React Native, or similar frameworks
  • Familiarity with animation tools like After Effects (but not required)
  • Experience building design systems or reusable motion systems
  • Interest in real-time, interactive, or generative animation

Additional Position Details

  • Supervisory Responsibilities
    • None
  • Physical Demands
    • Physical demands of the job, including bending, sitting, and lifting
    • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Work Environment
    • 5 days onsite/week
  • Travel
    • No travel requirements at this time, subject to change

This job description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties or responsibilities that are required of the employee. Duties, responsibilities and activities may change or be assigned at any time with or without notice.

Compensation

Pay Range: $51.00 - $61.25 hourly

The successful candidate’s pay will be based on various factors such as individual qualifications and work location.

Benefits

Benefits and perks may vary depending on location and nature of the work, but eligible employees have access to medical, dental, vision, life, and AD&D benefits, health savings and flexible spending accounts, other telehealth and wellness benefits, a minimum of seven paid holidays per year, accrual of at least 6.5 days (Temporary Employment) to at least 15 days (Regular Employment) of paid time off per year, a 401k plan with company match, discretionary bonuses dependent on company, team or individual performance, and referral bonuses for eligible hired referrals.

As an equal opportunity employer, RUN Studios is committed to pay equity and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, genetic information, protected veteran status, disability, age, or other legally protected status.
