Job description

Job Title: Risk Control Specialist
FLSA Status: Exempt
Job Family: Underwriting
Department: UW - Risk Control
Location(s): Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin
JOB SUMMARY
Responsible to assist in the acquisition and retention of profitable business through direct contact with prospective and current policyholders by providing underwriting with account classification information, identification of risk control program weaknesses, and suggesting risk control corrective measures to the prospect or insured.
POSITION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide Underwriting with an overall opinion of a prospective or existing insureds desirability.
  • Conduct on-site risk control evaluations of existing and prospective policyholders to determine account attitude toward controlling losses.
  • Identify and provide underwriting with descriptions of prospective and existing insureds operations and ministry profile.
  • Conduct complete analysis of existing accounts to verify construction class and quality and to establish accurate building valuation.
  • Identify risk control program weaknesses and suggest corrective measures to the prospective or insured account.
  • Respond to agent and insured inquiries with respect to risk control and risk management issues.
  • Accurately complete the designated number of risk control visits set by management.
  • Ensure that risk control reports are timely completed in order to meet underwriter's limitations on cancellation, non-renewal, and production requirements.
  • Project a positive and professional image in order to gain the confidence of prospective and existing insureds, agents, regulators, and others.
  • Assist with training of agents on risk control and risk management issues and procedures.
  • Maintain expenses within company and department established parameters.
  • Project a competent and professional standard in all written communication.
  • Complete other projects as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Must be able to locate and extract essential construction elements from blueprints, understand and apply basic construction math, and have a general understanding of construction practices (excavation, concrete, various structural techniques, plumbing, HVAC, and electrical).
  • Must be able to work with minimal supervision and be skilled in time management and able to plan and execute work strategies.
  • Must possess solid computer skills and be able to input and access data from company and portable computer equipment.
  • Must be able to evaluate structures by walking, climbing, bending and stooping.
  • Must possess strong interpersonal skills and present a positive and professional image.
  • The ability to travel extensively by air and by driving, including overnight stays, is an integral part of this position and as such, a valid driver's license and a clear driving record are essential.
  • Effectively interface with external contacts, Brotherhood employees, managers, and department staff members.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
List Degree Requirement, Years' Experience, and Certifications
  • Associate's degree required.
  • Must be able to pass and maintain any state required licensing requirements for risk control inspectors.
  • Must have four or more years of general business, insurance or related experience.
  • Degree in Engineering, Safety Industrial Operations or the physical sciences is desired.
  • CPCU, ARM or other risk control-insurance related coursework is desired.
  • Hands-on experience in construction or building/industrial maintenance and an understanding of construction terminology is desired.
