How much do risk and insurance manager jobs pay per year?
What Does a Risk and Insurance Manager Do?
As a risk and insurance manager, you have the combined duties of a risk manager and an insurance manager. Risk management is the practice of controlling risk through tactics that offset the likelihood of financial loss. Insurance management, on the other hand, is used to develop ways to limit or those losses by purchasing insurance against risks, such as disability payments or employee accidents. Your combined responsibilities as a risk and insurance manager revolve around reducing risk while developing safety nets to prevent loss on risks the company does take. This is especially crucial in corporate risk management, in which you are often dealing with risky investments on which the company is unwilling to take a full loss.
What is the difference between Risk And Insurance Manager vs Insurance Analyst?
| Aspect | Risk And Insurance Manager | Insurance Analyst |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | Certifications like CPCU, ARM, or CPCU | Adjuster licenses, actuarial certifications often preferred |
| Work Environment | Corporate risk management departments, insurance carriers | Insurance companies, brokerage firms, consulting agencies |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Used in industries with significant risk exposure, large corporations | Used in insurance firms, underwriting, claims analysis |
| Search & Comparison Intent | Understanding risk management roles, career paths | Analyzing insurance policies, assessing claims |
The main difference is that a Risk And Insurance Manager oversees risk management strategies and insurance programs within an organization, focusing on risk mitigation and policy management. An Insurance Analyst primarily evaluates insurance policies, analyzes claims, and supports underwriting processes. Both roles require relevant certifications and are integral to the insurance and risk management industry, but they serve different functions within the risk and insurance ecosystem.

- Claims Oversight: Manage insured claims processes, coordinating with insurance carriers, third-party administrators, and internal legal teams on litigated matters, including Defense Base Act (DBA) claims.
- Contract Risk Review: Evaluate and advise on risk-related contractual provisions, including insurance, indemnification, and risk of loss terms.
- Specialty Insurance Placement: Manage the placement of project-specific and country-specific insurance programs to support global operations.
- Regulatory & Audit Support: Ensure timely and accurate responses to audit requests, including those from government agencies.
- Policy & Process Improvement: Drive continuous improvement of risk management policies and procedures, aligning with industry best practices and operational excellence.
- Program Enhancement: Recommend solutions, programs, or services to strengthen and evolve the company's risk management framework.
- Market Intelligence: Stay informed on insurance market conditions and claims trends to proactively adjust risk management strategies.
- Team Leadership & Development: Lead, coach, and develop both direct and cross-functional team members, fostering engagement and alignment with corporate financial objectives.
- Planning & Prioritization: Oversee departmental planning, including budgeting for insurance programs and personnel, while effectively prioritizing initiatives and resources.
- Strategic Support: Support the Treasurer and broader leadership team on strategic initiatives, including risk-related aspects of M&A activities.
Basic Qualifications
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Business, Insurance/Risk Management, or a related field required.
