What is RFID engineering?

RFID engineering is the field focused on the design, development, implementation, and maintenance of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) systems. RFID engineers work with technologies that use radio waves to identify and track objects, people, or animals automatically. Their responsibilities may include hardware design, software development, system integration, troubleshooting, and ensuring data security. RFID engineers are employed across industries such as logistics, retail, healthcare, and manufacturing to improve inventory management and operational efficiency.

What are some common challenges faced by RFID engineers when integrating RFID systems into existing workflows?

RFID engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring compatibility between new RFID hardware and legacy IT systems, managing interference from environmental factors like metal surfaces or electronic noise, and maintaining data accuracy during high-volume scanning. Collaboration with IT, operations, and supply chain teams is critical to address these issues and tailor solutions to specific business needs. Proactively testing and troubleshooting in real-world environments helps ensure a smooth deployment and long-term reliability of the RFID system.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an RFID engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an RFID Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, wireless communication, and embedded systems, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with RFID hardware, antenna design, RFID reader/writer configuration, and programming languages like C/C++ or Python is typically required, along with certifications such as CompTIA RFID+ being advantageous. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills in this role. These abilities are crucial for designing, implementing, and troubleshooting RFID solutions that meet organizational needs and comply with industry standards.

What is the difference between Rfid Engineering vs Rfid Technician?

AspectRfid EngineeringRfid Technician
Required CredentialsBachelor's degree in engineering, electronics, or related fieldTechnical diploma or certification in RFID technology
Work EnvironmentDesign, development, and testing of RFID systems in labs or officesInstallation, maintenance, and troubleshooting RFID hardware on-site
Employer & Industry UsageManufacturers, tech companies, logistics firmsRetail, warehousing, supply chain companies

Rfid Engineers focus on designing and developing RFID systems, requiring higher education and technical skills. Rfid Technicians handle installation and maintenance, often with specialized certifications. Both roles are essential in RFID projects but differ in scope and responsibilities.

Is RFID engineering in demand?

RFID engineering is in demand as companies increasingly adopt RFID technology for inventory management, supply chain tracking, and asset identification. Professionals with skills in RFID system design, integration, and related tools like antennas and readers are sought after in various industries, including retail, logistics, and manufacturing.

Job description

Job Summary
The Engineer Manager, DPP, EUBR and EPR will be responsible for leading the strategy, development, and implementation of Vertiv's Digital Product Passport (DPP), EU Battery Regulation (EUBR) and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) programs to meet regulatory compliance obligations with mandatory sustainability laws and circular economy goals. The DPP and EPR Manager will work closely with Vertiv's global responsible business, sustainability, procurement, and material compliance teams to ensure the success of Vertiv's DPP and EPR programs.  This position is a strategic technical leadership role focused on creating, managing, and exporting digital dossiers that track a product's entire lifecycle, from raw materials to end-of-life, to meet current and upcoming EU and US regulations. This role covers a range of responsibilities, including bridging cross-functional teams, overseeing technical integration, data traceability, and stakeholder reporting to enhance supply chain transparency. This role is critical for meeting mandatory regulatory requirements, particularly in sectors like batteries, textiles, and industrial electronics.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the strategy, development, and implementation of digital systems that track and archive product lifecycle data-such as materials origins, manufacturing, maintenance, and sustainability to meet regulatory compliance and circular economy goals.
  • Develop systems for archiving company data and documentation of product components and test results for every single product separately while assigning a unique QR code to each.  The system should also have a separate public-facing portal where customers can access a subset of this data which has been released to the public portal.
  • Define and implement supplier qualification criteria related to DPP data provision capabilities, integrating these into existing engineering, procurement governance and vendor management processes
  • Analyze Vertiv's products, components and batteries for adherence to mandatory DPP regulations and EPR obligations (including EU ESPR, EUBR, Packaging Waste Directives and US EPR responsibilities).
  • Develop and manage structured processes for collecting DPP-required data (material composition, carbon footprint, substances of concern) from suppliers via procurement and engineering channels
  • Bridge cross-functional teams, overseeing technical data integration, data traceability, and stakeholder reporting to ensure DPP and EPR obligations and deadlines are being met.
  • Collaborate with material compliance, sustainability, engineering, procurement, and marketing teams to integrate DPP and EPR requirements into the product development lifecycle.
  • Own program coordination for EUBR implementation, ensuring business readiness across data, systems, supplier engagement, and regulatory deliverables
  • Support the integration of DPP systems with existing Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), and Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES).
  • Align DPP and EPR data requirements with existing procurement intake processes (e.g., ServiceNow Intake Forms) and engineering product development processes to ensure regulatory data is clearly identified at the product design stage and captured at the point of purchase initiation rather than retroactively

  • Managing technical data exchange with external suppliers to ensure traceability across the value chain.

  • Ensure secure information sharing via unique identifiers (e.g., QR codes, RFID) and decentralized data storage

  • Develop and maintain subject matter expertise on DPP and EPR regulations, and best practices.

    Required Skills & Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's degree in computer engineering, or related discipline, or experience in Data Architecting preferred. Minimum 5-7 years relevant Engineering management experience - Project Management Professional (PMP) certification preferred.
    • Excellent leadership abilities to guide cross-functional teams and report to senior leadership.
    • Knowledge and understanding of EU DPP regulation, EU Battery Regulation (EU 2023/1542), EU Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR, EU 2024/1781).
    • Knowledge of, or demonstrated ability to learn Commercial Product Information Management () Systems and Manufacturing Execution Systems
    • Ability to bridge cross-functional teams, overseeing technical integration, and data traceability.
    • Knowledge of product lifecycle management (PLM) systems, data traceability tools, and serialization/QR technology preferred.
    • Understanding of sustainability standards, circular economy principles, and upcoming EU regulations regarding product data.
    • Ability to map out long-term product data roadmaps and align them with business objectives.
    • Experience with Bill of Material management systems (ex. Oracle PD PLM, Agile, TeamCenter)
    • English, fluent written and spoken
    • Strong analytical skills - should have the ability to evaluate, analyze and present data to senior management teams.
    • Empathetic collaborator whose style builds commitment and engagement.
    • Intellectual curiosity about determining root causes to solve complex problems.
    • Self-motivated, driven individual who is comfortable working in a global, matrixed, fast-paced environment
