What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an RF Calibration Technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as an RF Calibration Technician, you need a solid understanding of radio frequency (RF) principles, electronics, and measurement techniques, typically supported by a degree or certification in electronics or a related field. Familiarity with calibration standards, spectrum analyzers, signal generators, and software such as LabVIEW or MET/CAL is essential. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for troubleshooting and documenting calibration results. These competencies ensure precise measurements, regulatory compliance, and the reliability of RF equipment in critical applications.

What are RF Calibration technicians?

RF Calibration technicians are professionals who specialize in testing, adjusting, and maintaining radio frequency (RF) equipment to ensure its accuracy and compliance with industry standards. They use specialized instruments to measure and calibrate devices such as signal generators, spectrum analyzers, and communication systems. Their work is essential for industries that rely on precise RF signals, such as telecommunications, aerospace, and defense. The calibration process helps maintain equipment performance, safety, and regulatory compliance.

What are some common challenges faced in an RF Calibration role and how are they typically addressed?

Professionals in RF Calibration often encounter challenges such as maintaining accuracy in measurements despite environmental fluctuations, keeping up with rapidly advancing technology, and troubleshooting complex equipment malfunctions. Addressing these issues usually involves rigorous adherence to calibration protocols, frequent training to stay updated with new instruments and standards, and close collaboration with engineering and quality assurance teams. Effective communication and meticulous record-keeping are also critical to ensure traceability and compliance with industry standards.

What is the difference between Rf Calibration vs Rf Technician?

Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM (Optional Overtime)

Salary: $60- 75 per hour, depending on experience (DPE)

About Micro Quality Calibration (MQC):

Founded in 1978, Micro Quality Calibration (MQC) is a growing, A2LA-accredited metrology laboratory specializing in calibration, repair, testing, and sales of precision measurement instruments. We serve high-reliability industries including Aerospace and Medical, and are known for technical rigor, customer responsiveness, and long-term client relationships.

Our Electrical and RF laboratories are fully accredited to ISO/IEC 17025, and all calibrations are performed in accordance with NIST-traceable standards. MQC is also accredited to ANSI/NCSL Z540.3-2006 and ANSI/NCSL Z540-1-1994.

The Opportunity:

We are seeking an experienced Calibration Supervisor to lead and strengthen our Electrical and RF calibration laboratory. This is a hands-on technical leadership role for someone who thrives in a high-precision environment and enjoys mentoring technicians while maintaining direct involvement at the bench.

This role was created to support a growing workload and provide additional leadership within the lab. You will work alongside a highly involved manager and play a key role in maintaining quality, throughput, and technical excellence.

Responsibilities:

  • Help supervise daily operations of the Electrical/RF lab, to meet turnaround times and quality goals.
  • Lead, train, and support calibration technicians, ensuring compliance with ISO/IEC 17025 standards.
  • Perform and oversee manual calibration of RF and microwave instruments, including signal generators, spectrum analyzers, power meters, and related equipment.
  • Perform and oversee calibration of electrical instruments, including digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, hipot testers, accelerometers, and related as needed.
  • Review calibration reports for technical accuracy, traceability, and completeness, ensuring all work is compliant.
  • Coordinate workload, assign priorities, and ensure timely completion of jobs.
  • Support internal and external audits and assist with corrective actions.
  • Maintain laboratory safety, equipment, and environmental controls.
  • Collaborate with Quality and laboratory leadership to resolve technical challenges and improve processes.

Requirements and Skills:

  • 5+ years of hands-on Electrical and RF calibration experience in a lab environment.
  • Prior leadership or supervisory experience in a calibration or technical team.
  • Strong expertise in manual instrumentation calibration, ISO/IEC 17025 standards, and measurement uncertainty.
  • Ability to clearly explain calibration theory and methodology.
  • Proficiency with calibration software, laboratory databases, and Microsoft Office.
  • Military PMEL, TMDE, or DOD calibration training or equivalent technical education preferred.
  • Experience supporting aerospace, medical, or other high-reliability industries is a plus.
  • Willingness to perform on-site calibrations at customer locations as required.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs, stand or sit for extended periods, maintain a valid driverโ€™s license with a clean driving record, and be a U.S. citizen.

Benefits: MQC offers comprehensive benefits including
