This role offers the opportunity to own modular construction projects from concept through construction in a collaborative, flat-structured engineering and design team based in South Bend, IN. You will transform client drawings into detailed modular construction documents, coordinate closely with internal construction teams and state agencies, and support projects across a wide range of commercial and industrial building types and materials, including wood, steel, and concrete block systems.

Responsibilities
  • Create complete, code-compliant plan sets for commercial modular construction projects for customer and state approval in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
  • Develop modular designs in Revit from a variety of client inputs, ranging from hand sketches to full foundation and architectural plans.
  • Produce and update construction documents and ensure they are accurate, coordinated, and ready for review by clients, internal teams, and regulatory entities.
  • Collaborate with clients to review construction documents, incorporate feedback, and make revisions as needed to meet project requirements and expectations.
  • Coordinate with the construction team to hand off finalized construction documents and provide ongoing design support throughout the build process.
  • Prepare and assist with documentation required for code approvals from state agencies across multiple states.
  • Apply ICC Building Code knowledge to ensure all designs meet applicable codes and standards for structural, MEP, and architectural elements.
  • Interact professionally and clearly with customers, co-workers, and state agencies to resolve questions, clarify design intent, and support project progress.
  • Assist with reviewing and interpreting shop drawings to confirm alignment with design documents and modular construction requirements.
  • Work closely with the drafting and engineering team to manage multiple projects simultaneously while meeting production schedules and quality expectations.
  • Visit the adjacent shop as needed to support construction teams, answer design questions, and verify that built components align with the design documents.
  • Run assigned projects from start to finish, maintaining familiarity with project details and ensuring continuity throughout the design and construction phases.
Essential Skills
  • Proficiency with Revit, including the ability to create and modify detailed 3D models and construction documents.

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with internal teams, external clients, and state agencies.
  • Ability to interpret architectural, structural, and MEP drawings and translate them into modular construction documents.
  • Working knowledge of ICC Building Codes and the ability to apply them to ensure designs are accurate and compliant.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced, production-focused environment while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Comfort working on a wide variety of commercial and industrial projects and adapting to different building materials, including wood, steel, and concrete block.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience in the construction industry, particularly in design, BIM, or hands-on roles related to building construction.
  • Familiarity with BIM workflows and coordination between architectural, structural, and MEP disciplines.
  • Practical understanding of how buildings are assembled, including construction processes and sequencing.
  • Experience creating or reviewing construction documents for commercial or industrial projects.
  • Exposure to modular construction or prefabrication environments.
  • Interest in growing into leadership responsibilities as the team expands over the next several years.
Work Environment

This is a full-time, on-site role with a typical Monday through Friday schedule. Standard hours are approximately 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with an initial schedule of 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and opportunities for overtime as you become more self-sufficient. Start times are flexible within reason, and the culture balances a fun, fairly laid-back atmosphere with a strong focus on fast-paced production and project delivery. The engineering, finance, and leadership teams work out of a standard office building featuring a collaborative environment with a mix of cubicles and private offices. The drafting and engineering team is small and cohesive, operating with a flat structure that allows drafters to run their own projects from start to finish. The shop is located next door, giving you regular opportunities to walk over, interact directly with construction teams, and see the modules and components you design being built. The organization offers strong health benefits, flexible PTO, eight paid holidays (including the Friday after Thanksgiving and a floating holiday), and a 401(k) plan with company match, supporting both your well-being and long-term financial security.
