Employers seek professionals skilled in Revit software to produce accurate, detailed construction documents, and job opportunities are expected to grow as BIM adoption expands.

What is a Revit drafter?

Revit is a 3D drafting and design software used primarily for Building Information Modeling (BIM). Much like AutoCAD software, Revit can be used to aid architects, engineers, designers, and renovators in planning and constructing buildings more efficiently. Revit drafters learn the program to create and model large commercial, residential, and public use buildings. They also utilize the software to manage model changes and streamline the drafting process. Revit drafters provide vital support in drafting detailed construction plans, so they must be proficient in various software programs, including Autodesk Revit, Revit MEP, AutoCAD, AutoCAD LT, and Revit Architectural.

Job Description

Join a collaborative drafting team in Indianapolis as a Structural CAD/Revit Technician, supporting engineers in the design and documentation of a wide range of building and facility projects. In this role, you develop and maintain structural Revit models and construction documents from schematic design through final deliverables, working closely with a lead CAD/Revit technician and project engineers. You will handle multiple projects simultaneously, typically 1–5 per week depending on size and scope, and contribute directly to high-quality, well-coordinated structural design documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain structural Revit models for building projects from schematic design through construction documents.
  • Produce structural drawings, plans, sections, details, schedules, and sheets in accordance with company standards and specific project requirements.
  • Collaborate with structural engineers, architects, MEP teams, and other disciplines to ensure thorough coordination across all project documents.
  • Assist with the preparation and updating of construction documents for new construction, renovations, and facility improvements.
  • Incorporate engineer markups, redlines, and design changes into Revit models and drawing sets accurately and efficiently.
  • Help identify and resolve model coordination issues, drawing inconsistencies, and constructability concerns.
  • Maintain organized project files, BIM standards, naming conventions, and documentation quality throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Support project teams during internal reviews, coordination meetings, and document submissions.
  • Participate in quality control efforts to ensure deliverables are complete, accurate, and aligned with project objectives.
  • Assist in developing and refining structural BIM standards, families, templates, and workflows as needed.

Essential Skills

  • 3+ years of recent, hands-on Revit experience, with strong utilization on active design projects (school and professional experience considered).
  • Proficiency in Revit for structural design and documentation.
  • Experience in design within structural, architectural, MEP, or other vertical construction or facilities-related fields.
  • Ability to produce construction documents, including plans, sections, details, schedules, and sheets.
  • Understanding of BIM processes and standards for coordinated multi-disciplinary models.
  • Capability to interpret and apply engineer markups, redlines, and design changes within Revit.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to documentation accuracy and quality.
  • Effective collaboration skills for working with engineers, architects, and other design disciplines.
  • Organizational skills to maintain file structures, naming conventions, and consistent documentation.
  • Problem-solving skills to identify and address coordination issues and constructability concerns.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with AutoCAD for structural or architectural drafting.
  • Experience or exposure to structural engineering concepts and structural analysis workflows.
  • Familiarity with BIM standards, families, templates, and workflow development.
  • Design experience related to industrial, education, manufacturing, pharmaceutical, commercial, agriculture, food and beverage, or utilities projects.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and adapt to varying project sizes and scopes.

Work Environment

The role is based within a consulting engineering firm environment with a standard office layout featuring cubicles and private offices. The team consists of approximately 40 professionals across structural engineering, site development, landscape architecture, and architecture. The firm focuses primarily on structural engineering for industrial and education-related projects, as well as work in manufacturing, pharmaceutical, commercial, agriculture, food and beverage, and utilities. Projects range from large multi-million-dollar new builds to smaller renovation and improvement efforts, such as platform installations.
