Job description

About the Role:

Founded in 1956, Lamart Corporation is a wide-web, custom coater and laminator of flexible substrates, including films, foils, foams, fabrics, scrims, and more. Our innovative products serve a variety of industriesโ€”such as aerospace, graphic arts, industrial, medical devices, and automotive. We take pride in being a trusted adhesive partner, offering tailored solutions that are not readily available in the market.

Reporting to the Manager of Process and Product Development (PPD), the Junior Chemist supports development, testing, and commercialization of adhesive, coating, laminate, and flexible-substrate products. This hands-on role prepares formulations, performs laboratory and performance testing, conducts FTIR analysis, reverse engineer products, and supports pilot and production trials.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate and communicate with PPD team, sales team, customers, mixing team, and other departments.
  • Prepare laboratory-scale adhesive, coating, primer, and laminate formulations.
  • Conduct physical, chemical, analytical, and performance testing of raw materials, in-process materials, and finished products.
  • Perform FTIR analysis to identify and compare polymers, adhesives, coatings, films, and other product components.
  • Reverse engineer competitive, customer-provided, and legacy products to evaluate material composition, construction, and performance characteristics.
  • Document laboratory procedures, test results, observations, and conclusions accurately.
  • Assist with laboratory, pilot-scale, and production trials involving coating, laminating, converting, and related processes.
  • Support raw-material qualification, alternative-material evaluation, troubleshooting, root-cause investigations, and product improvements.
  • Review Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and identify appropriate chemical storage, handling, personal protective equipment, and disposal requirements in accordance with company safety procedures.
  • Prepare samples for internal evaluation, customer trials, and external testing.
  • Follow all quality procedures, safety requirements, and good laboratory practices.
  • Conduct mechanical testing (such as tensile strength, adhesion, and flexibility tests) to support product development and process optimization.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in chemistry, Materials Science, Polymer Science, or a related field.
  • 1-2 years of relevant laboratory, manufacturing, adhesive, coating, converting, laminating, or materials-testing experience.
  • Experience using FTIR spectroscopy for material identification or comparison.
  • Familiarity with polymer chemistry, adhesives, coatings, films, laminates, or flexible substrates preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail, analytical judgment, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to follow written procedures, manage multiple assignments, and communicate technical findings clearly.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with adhesive/coating performance testing, including peel adhesion, tack, shear, tensile, thickness, coat weight, viscosity, or solids content.
  • Competitive-product analysis, material characterization, or reverse engineering.
  • Coating, laminating, converting, or flexible-material manufacturing processes.
  • Statistical analysis and documented quality systems such as ISO or GMP.
