How much do circuit reverse engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Sep 9, 2026, the average yearly pay for circuit reverse engineer in the United States is $136,286.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $89,000.00 and $178,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a circuit reverse engineer?

Circuit Reverse Engineers are professionals who analyze electronic circuits and systems to understand their design, functionality, and operation, often without access to original documentation or schematics. They use specialized tools and techniques to deconstruct hardware, identify components, and recreate circuit diagrams. This work is essential in areas such as hardware security, product compatibility, legacy system support, and intellectual property analysis. Circuit reverse engineering can also help detect vulnerabilities, ensure compliance, or recover lost designs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a circuit reverse engineer?

To thrive as a Circuit Reverse Engineer, you need a solid background in electronics, circuit analysis, and digital/analog systems, usually supported by a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with tools like oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, PCB design software, and often certifications in hardware security or embedded systems are typical requirements. Exceptional problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and persistence set top professionals apart in this role. These skills are crucial for accurately analyzing, replicating, or improving circuit designs while ensuring compliance with legal and ethical standards.

What are some typical challenges faced by circuit reverse engineers when analyzing complex hardware designs?

Circuit Reverse Engineers often encounter challenges such as incomplete or undocumented schematics, multi-layered PCBs, and proprietary or obfuscated components. These complexities require strong analytical skills, patience, and familiarity with a variety of tools like oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and de-soldering equipment. Collaborating closely with other engineers, such as firmware analysts or hardware designers, is common to piece together how a device operates. Remaining adaptable and detail-oriented helps overcome these obstacles and ensures accurate reconstruction of the original circuitry.

What is the difference between Circuit Reverse Engineer vs PCB Designer?

AspectCircuit Reverse EngineerPCB Designer
Primary FocusAnalyzing and understanding existing circuit designs and hardwareDesigning and laying out printed circuit boards from specifications
Required SkillsElectronics analysis, debugging, hardware disassemblyCircuit schematic creation, PCB layout, CAD tools
Work EnvironmentElectronics labs, forensic analysis settingsDesign offices, manufacturing facilities
Common CertificationsElectronics certifications, reverse engineering coursesPCB design certifications, CAD software proficiency

While both roles involve electronics and hardware, Circuit Reverse Engineers focus on analyzing existing circuits to understand or troubleshoot them, whereas PCB Designers create new circuit layouts based on specifications. Both roles require strong electronics knowledge but serve different stages of product development and analysis.
