Project Accounting Intern

Our Project Accounting Intern supports project teams by ensuring accurate financial tracking and reporting. In this role, the intern is responsible for supporting the full project life cycle-from bidding to closeout- through job costing, project-based accounting, percentage-of-completion revenue recognition, and AIA billing processes like retainage and progress invoicing.
OUR INTERNSHIP PROGRAM:
As a Project Accounting Intern at Helix Electric, you will gain hands-on experience and immerse yourself in both our organization and the construction industry. This role offers the opportunity to learn how accounting serves as a critical business partner to project operations throughout the entire project life cycle. This hands-on approach to learning coupled with top-notch mentorship from experienced accounting and operations professionals will afford you the opportunity to develop deep understanding of how financial decisions impact project success. HOW YOU'LL CONTRIBUTE:
  • Provides accounting support for on-site project management teams.
  • Assist with project setup and closeout.
  • Owner contract review and readiness.
  • Work with the project team to ensure timely payment receipt.
  • Responsible for hands-on job cost accounting for a project to include Subcontractor AP processing, Client invoicing, and budgeting.
  • Participate in project meetings and provide management with updates on project financials.
  • Manages vendor compliance, insurance, lien waivers, retention and W-9s.
  • Compiles, prepares, and analyzes monthly project billings per contract requirements.
  • Ensure all costs are accurately recorded to the correct job and cost code.
  • Collaborate with project managers to review cost-to-complete projections.
  • Monitor and track project budgets, costs, commitments, and forecasts.
  • Review project costs and time entries for accuracy and resolve discrepancies quickly.
  • Work closely with project managers, vendors/subs, and other parties to ensure timely and accurate process of job accounting functions.
  • Work closely with all levels of the organization to provide project accounting support and to assist with accounting and tax audits.
  • Track retainage, change orders, and percent-complete

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:
  • Pursuing a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Construction Management, Accounting, Finance, or other business-related field
  • Highly motivated individual with strong organizational and time management skills
  • Strong quantitative, analytical and problem-solving
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Careful attention to detail and reliability of output
