What is a retention account manager?

Retention Account Managers are professionals responsible for maintaining and strengthening relationships with existing clients to minimize customer churn. They proactively address client concerns, identify opportunities for upselling or cross-selling, and ensure customer satisfaction to encourage long-term loyalty. Their key duties often include troubleshooting issues, providing account updates, and collaborating with other departments to meet client needs. Retention Account Managers play a crucial role in maximizing customer lifetime value and supporting business growth.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a retention account manager?

To excel as a Retention Account Manager, you generally need strong customer relationship management, sales acumen, and problem-solving skills, often supported by a degree in business or related fields. Familiarity with CRM platforms like Salesforce, customer analytics tools, and sometimes industry-specific certifications are commonly required. Outstanding communication, negotiation, and empathy help build trust and loyalty with clients. These skills and qualities are crucial for driving customer satisfaction, reducing churn, and achieving company retention goals.

Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Client Account Manager based in Netherlands.

As a Client Account Manager, you'll take ownership of strategic client relationships across the MSP and cybersecurity ecosystem.
You'll work directly with business owners and senior decision-makers to understand commercial challenges and identify opportunities for growth.
Beyond traditional account management, you'll act as a trusted advisor, shaping solutions, proposals, retention strategies, and expansion plans.
The role combines relationship management with a strong commercial focus, giving you direct responsibility for client revenue and account growth.
You'll collaborate across marketing, sales, and partner networks while helping clients make informed decisions around digital growth.
The environment is highly autonomous, international, and fast-moving, with significant exposure to senior stakeholders.
This is an opportunity to build a strong network within the growing MSP/MSSP market while making a measurable impact on client success and business performance.

Accountabilities
  • Build, develop, and maintain strong relationships with MSP and cybersecurity clients across a diverse portfolio.
  • Lead client conversations to understand business objectives, challenges, priorities, and growth opportunities.
  • Act as a trusted commercial advisor, recommending relevant solutions rather than simply coordinating client requests.
  • Own client retention, account expansion, renewals, and upsell opportunities.
  • Take responsibility for a revenue target linked to client retention and growth.
  • Develop and shape commercial proposals, presentations, sales materials, and other client-facing content.
  • Build relationships across MSP, MSSP, channel, partner, and referral communities.
  • Discuss digital growth opportunities with clients, including SEO, paid media, content marketing, and broader digital strategies.
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen client relationships, increase account value, and support long-term commercial outcomes.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and senior stakeholders to ensure client strategies and proposed solutions are aligned with business objectives.
Requirements
  • 3+ years of experience in MSP/MSSP account management, agency account management, channel partnerships, or another comparable client-facing commercial role.
  • Strong understanding of managed IT services, cybersecurity, recurring-revenue business models, and the needs of technical B2B buyers.
  • Comfortable discussing SEO, paid media, content marketing, and digital growth with clients at a commercially meaningful level.
  • Demonstrated commercial ownership, such as managing a book of business, revenue target, renewals, retention, or account expansion.
  • Experience developing proposals, sales presentations, commercial materials, or sales-engineering content.
  • Excellent written and spoken English, with strong communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Confident engaging with senior decision-makers and translating complex commercial challenges into practical recommendations.
  • Strong consultative selling and problem-solving abilities, with the initiative to identify opportunities rather than simply follow predefined processes.
  • Self-directed and comfortable taking ownership of multiple client relationships in a remote, autonomous environment.
  • Existing relationships within the MSP/MSSP ecosystem are an advantage.
  • Experience working with MSP-focused marketing or growth agencies is a plus.
  • Channel, partnership, or referral-network experience is desirable.
  • Experience selling to technical B2B decision-makers is beneficial.
Benefits
  • Full-time position with a fully remote working model.
  • Full-time contract with a global team and international client base.
  • High degree of autonomy and ownership over a portfolio of strategic accounts.
  • Direct exposure to MSP and cybersecurity business owners and senior decision-makers.
  • Opportunity to influence client strategy, retention, expansion, and revenue growth.
  • Ability to build a valuable professional network across the growing MSP/MSSP and cybersecurity ecosystem.
  • Commercially focused role with direct visibility into business performance and client outcomes.
  • Opportunity to develop expertise across account management, digital growth, partnerships, and consultative selling.
  • Collaborative environment with significant scope to shape client solutions and commercial opportunities.
