Position: Retail Assistant Manager
Reports To: Retail Store Manager
Collaborates With: Volunteer Coordinator, Internal Operations Manager,
Processing Center Team, Programs Team
The Retail Assistant Manager
at St. Vincent de Paul Northern Kentucky supports daily store operations while
embodying the mission of service, dignity, and compassion. This is a highly
engaged, floor-based leadership role focused on real-time team support,
operational execution, and collaboration across departments, under the
direction of the Store Manager. This role helps ensure a
welcoming, values-driven environment for customers, donors, volunteers, and
neighbors in need. The Assistant Manager plays a vital part in ensuring that
every donation and customer interaction is handled with efficiency, care, and
dignity while supporting team development and maintaining store standards. Key Responsibilities Customer & Donor
Engagement
Welcome all customers and donors with warmth,
professionalism, and gratitude that reflects our Vincentian values
Communicate the impact of purchases, donations,
and assistance programs to build customer connection and mission awareness
Assist with resolving customer concerns
respectfully, reinforcing SVdP values
Ensure neighbors using vouchers or seeking
assistance are treated with dignity, respect, and compassion
Team Leadership &
Supervision
Serve as a visible leader on the floor,
supporting team productivity and modeling customer service excellence
Assist with training, coaching, and mentoring
team members, including Retail Associates and Retail Donation Associates
Mentor and develop high-performing team members,
identifying those ready to take on Keyholder or other leadership
responsibilities.
Help maintain appropriate staffing levels,
monitor staff break compliance, and ensure smooth shift transitions
Support scheduling and timekeeping as needed, in
coordination with the Store Manager
Reinforce store policies and procedures while
fostering a positive and inclusive team culture
Serve as the manager on duty in the absence of
the Store Manager, using sound judgment to address customer, staff, or
operational needs in alignment with SVdP policies
Retail Operations
Assist in maintaining clean, organized, and
well-merchandised sales floors that reflect SVdPs standards
Support inventory flow through pricing, stocking,
and visual merchandising strategies
Contribute to achieving sales goals by adjusting
floor coverage, supporting promotions, and keeping the team focused
Perform opening and closing procedures, register
balancing, and secure deposit handling as needed
Safety & Compliance
Monitor the store for cleanliness, safety, and
accessibility concerns
Help ensure compliance with SVdP policies and
procedures across staff and volunteers
Support incident reporting and inventory accuracy
Support team awareness of theft risks and report
suspicious activity in coordination with the Store Manager.
Collaboration with
Internal Operations Manager
Implement in-store signage, promotions, and event
support in coordination with the Internal Operations Manager (IOM)
Maintain store presentation and communication
materials in alignment with organizational goals
Volunteer Engagement &
Group Support
Collaborate with
the Volunteer Coordinator to ensure that volunteer shifts are aligned with
daily store needs and that volunteers are properly prepared, trained, and
supported.
Welcome and
supervise volunteers during shifts, ensuring task readiness, meaningful
engagement, and alignment with our mission of service and dignity.
Provide guidance
and coaching in a humble and respectful manner, encouraging personal growth and
engagement in service. Consult with the Volunteer Coordinator for recurring or
escalated concerns.
Assist with
clock-in/out procedures and communicate any time-tracking concerns to the
Volunteer Coordinator.
Support group
volunteer activities by preparing task lists, providing position orientation,
and supervising groups during their shift.
When the
Volunteer Coordinator is unavailable, help lead group introductions, assign
tasks, and collect waivers as needed. Programs & Neighbor
Support
Treat all neighbors in need with compassion and
dignity, upholding SVdP values
Provide guidance and referrals to the Help Line
or Resource Directory when neighbors request assistance
Stay informed about SVdP programs and help
communicate updates to team members
Report any concerns about voucher misuse or
procedural issues to the Store Manager or Programs Director
Job Requirements
2+ years of retail or supervisory experience
(nonprofit or service-oriented environment preferred)
Alignment with SVdPs mission and values
Strong interpersonal and leadership skills;
ability to motivate others while maintaining a compassionate presence
Proficiency with basic point-of-sale systems and
Microsoft Office tools
Availability to work evenings, weekends, and
rotating shifts as needed
Ability to perform physical retail tasks
(standing, lifting up to 50 lbs, bending, etc.)
Strong customer service instincts, with the
ability to respond compassionately and professionally in a fast-paced
environment
Performance Expectations
Maintain a strong
daily floor presence, spending approximately 80% of the time engaged with team
members, volunteers, and customers to ensure real-time operational support,
coaching, and service delivery.
Ensure smooth and
mission-aligned store operations by supporting customer service, sales floor
coverage, merchandise flow, and team coordination in collaboration with the
Store Manager.
Foster a
respectful, mission-driven team culture by modeling Vincentian values,
supporting peer development, and reinforcing expectations through consistent,
compassionate leadership.
Support the
achievement of store goals by helping drive sales initiatives, maintaining
safety standards, and ensuring accurate execution of opening/closing, register,
and inventory procedures.
Support
meaningful volunteer engagement by preparing daily task assignments, providing
on-the-floor training and supervision, and collaborating with the Volunteer
Coordinator to ensure volunteer shifts are well-organized and impactful.
Collaborate
effectively with the Store Manager, Internal Operations Manager, Processing
Center, Programs Director, and Volunteer Services to ensure store operations
remain coordinated, informed, and aligned with organizational priorities.
