Retail Software Developer information

What is a retail software developer?

A Retail Software Developer is a technology professional who designs, develops, and maintains software applications specifically for the retail industry. These applications can include point-of-sale (POS) systems, inventory management tools, e-commerce platforms, and customer relationship management solutions. Retail Software Developers work to ensure that retail businesses can operate efficiently, provide better customer experiences, and adapt to changing market needs. Their work often involves collaborating with other IT professionals, understanding retail business requirements, and implementing security and scalability best practices.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a retail software developer?

To thrive as a Retail Software Developer, you need strong programming skills (such as Java, C#, or JavaScript), a solid understanding of retail business processes, and typically a degree in computer science or related field. Experience with point-of-sale (POS) systems, e-commerce platforms, and databases, as well as familiarity with version control tools like Git, is highly valuable. Outstanding problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and adaptability are essential soft skills that help manage changing requirements and work effectively with cross-functional teams. These competencies ensure you can build reliable, user-friendly retail software solutions that directly support business goals and customer satisfaction.

How does a retail software developer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams in a retail organization?

Retail Software Developers frequently work alongside product managers, UX/UI designers, and data analysts to deliver solutions that enhance the retail customer experience. They participate in regular team meetings to gather requirements, provide technical input, and ensure alignment with business goals. Effective communication and collaboration skills are essential, as developers often integrate their work with point-of-sale systems, inventory management, and e-commerce platforms. This collaborative environment helps ensure that software solutions are robust, user-friendly, and meet the evolving needs of both customers and staff.

Software Engineering Manager

CSC Generation

Job description

CSC Generation is the AI-native holding company re-engineering omnichannel retail. We acquire iconic brands and transform them with Genesis, our operating platform combining a Data Fabric, Automation Engine, proprietary tools, and shared services to modernize operations, elevate customer experience, and expand margins. With $1B+ in revenue across 13 brands, our portfolio includes Sur La Table, Backcountry, One Kings Lane, and others that serve as real-world innovation labs.

Reports to: Chief Technology Officer
Location: Austin (Hybrid) / Remote (United States)
About the Role
As our Software Engineering Manager, you will lead a team of engineers building and scaling the services that power CSC Generation's Retail Service Cloud — the technical backbone shared across 13+ brands. This role exists because we are growing fast and need a hands-on technical leader who can drive architectural decisions, ship meaningful features, and raise the bar for engineering quality across the platform.

You will own a domain end-to-end: setting technical direction, managing the roadmap, mentoring engineers, and staying close enough to the code to debug, review, and build alongside your team. At the 6–12 month mark, success looks like a team that ships reliably, a domain that is measurably more scalable and maintainable than when you arrived, and a set of engineers who are growing under your leadership.

This is a lean team. You will own a lot, move fast, and make decisions with full end-to-end responsibility.
What You'll DoTechnical Leadership
  • Serve as the technical owner for your domain or service within our Retail Service Cloud.
  • Lead the design, development, and implementation of the technical roadmap — from building new features to scaling the platform.
  • Identify and resolve complex technical challenges while ensuring performance, reliability, and scalability.
  • Architect and implement frameworks that power upcoming projects.
  • Modernize and optimize our technology stack by replacing legacy code and services.
Team Development
  • Build and mentor a team of developers, driving productivity, growth, and engineering excellence.
  • Act as the primary technical point of contact, clearly communicating decisions and pushing back on requests when necessary to maintain quality and focus.
Delivery & Operations
  • Plan and manage sprints, triage tickets, and contribute to product roadmap discussions.
Required Qualifications
  • 5+ years of software engineering experience, with at least 2 years in a technical lead or engineering management role with direct reports.
  • Proficiency in modern frameworks and languages such as TypeScript, JavaScript, React, Node.js, Python, or Django.
  • Demonstrated ability to be at least 50% hands-on — writing, reviewing, and debugging production code — while also managing a team and driving technical strategy.
  • Experience owning a domain or service end-to-end: architecture decisions, roadmap planning, and delivery.
  • Strong track record of mentoring engineers and improving team productivity and code quality.
  • Comfort working in a fast-moving environment where priorities shift and decisions must be made with incomplete information.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience building platforms or shared services in a multi-brand or multi-tenant retail or e-commerce environment.
  • Familiarity with AI/ML tooling, prompt engineering, or integrating LLM-based features into production systems.
  • Prior experience working in or alongside a platform team supporting multiple internal engineering customers.
  • Background in modernizing legacy systems or leading platform migration projects at scale.
Why Join
The people who do best here are builders. They take ownership, move fast, and want to see the direct impact of their work.
  • Executive Access: Work directly with brand CEOs and senior leadership, solving real business problems and earning mentorship from top operators.
  • AI-First Skill Building: Get hands-on with the most advanced AI tools in the market — from automation to prompt engineering, you will build a modern tech stack that sets you apart in any industry.
  • Accelerated Career Path: High performers are quickly entrusted with greater responsibility, new challenges, and leadership opportunities across our portfolio of brands.
  • Competitive Benefits: Paid time off policies, 401(k) match, medical/dental/vision coverage, supplemental insurance options, and employee discounts across our portfolio companies.
Interview Process
  1. Recruiter Screen: A 30-minute call with our recruiting team to discuss your background, the role, and what you are looking for in your next opportunity.
  2. Technical Challenge: A short take-home or live coding challenge so we can understand how you approach problems, architecture decisions, and execution.
  3. Leadership & Technical Interviews: Deep-dive conversations with CSC engineering leadership covering your technical background, management approach, product mindset, and how you have driven results.
  4. In-Person Interview: An on-site visit to meet the broader team and work through a real technical or operational problem together.
  5. Reference Checks: Conducted in parallel with the final stages where possible.
  6. Offer: We move quickly for the right candidate.
