Job Description:
Job Title: Retail Security Officer
Department: Retail Security
FLSA: Non-Exempt
* Multiple positions available across our 8 state region. Hiring happens in each area and officers rotate between their local stores.
General Function:
Provides prompt, efficient and friendly customer service by maintaining a safe and secure store environment for customers and employees. The retail security officer patrols and monitors premises, and, if needed, apprehending theft suspects in compliance with Hy-Vee's standards and guidelines.

Reporting Relations:
Accountable and Reports to: Retail Security District Director; Regional Assistant Vice President
Positions that Report to you: None
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Exhibiting respect, concern and patience in all customer and employee interactions.
  • Monitors the store property, as well as customer and employee activities, for potential theft of assets or damage to assets on Hy-Vee's property.
  • Takes appropriate action to prevent theft; apprehends individuals engaged in theft activity.
  • Contacts and coordinates with local law enforcement regarding known offenders or suspicious persons observed during duties, parking lot accidents, notifies fire department or ambulance services in case of emergency, maintains public safety within the store.
  • Reports unsafe conditions inside and outside of the store to management.
  • Reports any internal theft suspicions and observations to Loss Prevention Area Manager.
  • Accurately completes all incident reports.
  • Assists Loss Prevention with investigations.
  • Reports to work when scheduled and works expected number of hours.
  • Maintains attendance, dress code and grooming standards according to set guidelines.
  • Ensures operation of equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements, following manufacturer's instructions, troubleshooting malfunctions and calling for repairs
  • Makes recommendations to Directors regarding loss prevention best practices.
  • Attends and participates in store security-related meetings.
  • Adheres to Hy-Vee's policies, procedures and individual store guidelines; maintains high ethical standards.
  • Performs other job-related duties and special projects as required.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Worker Characteristics:
  • Surveillance skills, manage uncertainty, judgment, objectivity, dependability, emotional control, integrity, safety management, professionalism and reporting skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to relate to and interact with people in a friendly, professional manner.
  • Must be skilled at de-escalation tactics; have an ability to solve practical problems with a variety of variables.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Must be able to report, write, or edit original correspondence; write identifying information; guide people and provide basic direction; interview to obtain information; and have increased contact with people. Must be able to write legibly.
  • Must have basic working knowledge of computer use, to include Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Outlook e-mail and calendars.

Education and Experience:
High School diploma or equivalent. Prior experience in law enforcement (with POST or equivalent certification), military service or corrections. Good standing from previous agencies. Valid driver's license required. Must be eligible or already permitted to carry a firearm.
Physical Requirements:
  • Must be willing and physically capable of apprehending theft suspects.
  • Must be able to perform the following physical activities: climbing (limited), balancing (limited), stooping, crouching, reaching, prolonged standing, walking long distances, running, pushing, lifting, and speaking without impediment (easily understood).
  • Good hearing and vision is required.
  • Must be able to demonstrate proficiency with duty weapon. Will be required to pass designated handgun qualification course.
  • Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in defensive tactics. Will be required to pass designated defensive tactic course.

The duties for this position are typically conducted in a store environment.
