We're looking for an experienced Assistant Controller who thrives in a fast-paced environment, enjoys solving complex accounting challenges, and wants to help build scalable financial processes from the ground up.

Position Summary

The Assistant Controller serves as the Controller's primary business partner and is responsible for overseeing the monthly close process, technical accounting, financial reporting, audit readiness, and internal controls. This role will play a key part in building and improving accounting processes through automation while ensuring compliance with U.S. GAAP.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced accounting professional who enjoys both technical accounting and leveraging technology to improve finance operations.

Key Responsibilities

Accounting & Month-End Close

  • Own and manage the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close process.
  • Maintain the integrity of the general ledger and chart of accounts.
  • Prepare, review, and approve journal entries and account reconciliations.
  • Ensure all balance sheet accounts are reconciled accurately and timely.
  • Investigate and resolve accounting discrepancies and variances.
  • Partner cross-functionally to ensure accurate financial reporting.

Technical Accounting & Financial Reporting

  • Research and apply U.S. GAAP guidance to complex accounting transactions.
  • Develop and maintain formal accounting policies and procedures.
  • Prepare financial statements and supporting schedules.
  • Support revenue recognition, lease accounting, inventory valuation, and other technical accounting matters.
  • Prepare financial analyses and variance explanations for leadership.

Audit & Internal Controls

  • Serve as the primary accounting contact for external auditors.
  • Coordinate audit requests and prepare supporting documentation.
  • Maintain strong internal controls and accounting documentation.
  • Continuously improve accounting processes to strengthen compliance and reduce risk.
  • Ensure the organization remains audit-ready throughout the year.

Systems & Process Improvement

  • Identify opportunities to automate accounting workflows and eliminate manual processes.
  • Utilize technology, AI tools, and data analytics to improve efficiency.
  • Partner with internal technology teams to improve accounting systems and reporting.
  • Support integrations between financial systems and operational platforms.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development of scalable finance infrastructure.

Leadership

  • Act as the Controller's second-in-command and trusted business partner.
  • Collaborate with Finance, Operations, Sales, and Executive Leadership.
  • Mentor future accounting team members and establish best practices.
  • Lead special projects and process improvement initiatives as the company grows.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience.
  • Strong experience managing the month-end close process.
  • Thorough knowledge of U.S. GAAP and financial reporting.
  • Experience preparing journal entries, reconciliations, and financial statements.
  • Experience supporting external audits.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • CPA certification or active CPA candidate.
  • Experience with high-growth startup or technology companies.
  • Automotive, dealership, retail, or inventory accounting experience.
  • Experience using ERP or accounting systems such as QuickBooks Online, NetSuite, Sage Intacct, or similar platforms.
  • Experience with SQL, Python, data automation, or reporting tools.
  • Familiarity with Git, APIs, or AI-assisted workflow tools is a plus.
  • Experience building scalable accounting processes and internal controls.

Compensation & Benefits

Base Salary: $165,000 – $200,000 annually, depending on experience
