General Role Description

Develop and maintain an engineering team for the research and development of power electronics and tools and controls technologies to meet Mid-Range Plan (MRP) commitments within a set of capital and human resources on a rolling 2 year time horizon.

Role Accountabilities

-  Build and lead a team of committed and capable employees to ensure successful development of products delivered to the Business Units (BU's)

-  Create, implement, and monitor a process for efficient resource assignments

-  Research and assess the Company's power electronics and tools and controls performance and competitive position; recommend appropriate R&D projects and investments to immediate manager and BU management

-  Monitor and investigate emerging power electronics, controls, embedded control hardware and software, and drive programming tool software technologies; recommend appropriate R&D projects and investments to the immediate manager and BU management

-  Create, develop, budget and manage R&D project and investment activities to meet business needs

-  Develop, monitor and manage team engineering capitalization and project expense budgets to meet business needs

-  Establish and maintain effective working relationships with parent company to secure approval for requested R&D projects and to obtain advance information about new power electronics and tools and controls products

-  Investigate product failures and recommend corrective actions, as requested by immediate manager

-  Prepare input for product development project status updates to immediate manager, staff, and BU's

-  Monitor skill base within the team and report opportunities for skills improvement to immediate manager

-  Ensure team members possess the necessary knowledge and skills and are trained to meet current and future needs per the MRP

-  Cooperate with other functional groups and other group companies to ensure projects are executed successfully

-  Establish and maintain a pool of qualified contract engineers to meet current and future needs per the MRP

-  Ensure client issues are resolved, at job site if necessary.  Escalate to appropriate management as needed

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor of science in electrical, electronic, or mechanical engineering or equivalent via education and/or work experience
  • 5 years of technical product development project leadership or technical management experience in any combination of power electronics and tools and controls in an industry related to the Company's served industries
  • 7 years of experience in power electronics or tools and controls development-
  • Demonstrated success leading high performance engineering teams to accomplish business goals
  • Demonstrated presentation skills
  • Demonstrated success managing financial results to plan in an industry related to the Company's served industries
  • Demonstrated experience with patents and intellectual property matters
  • Demonstrated successful working relationships with clients, suppliers, and other internal and external contacts
  • Demonstrated successful and positive personal leadership, interpersonal, organizational, administrative, and communication skills
  • Demonstrated continuous improvement in areas of responsibility
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook, MS Projects and an ERP business system
  • Availability to travel domestically and internationally, approximately 20%, sometimes with limited notice

Preferred Qualifications

-   Master of science in electrical, electronic, or mechanical engineering

-   15 years of experience in power electronics or tools and controls development

-   Demonstrated successful working relationships with foreign parent or subsidiary companies

-   Demonstrated success leading remotely located teams
